I was counting total calories and fat on another diet, but I actally gained weight.
I've done Atkin's before, and lost a lot of weight by faithfully following the 2002 version of Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution (the last one he wrote, before the Atkn's Company came along and junked everything up with the bars and shakes). I'm going back to that. It always takes a few days to get into the swing after not following it, but once I get into it, I should start losing weight quickly.
The best things you can do to help your weight loss along while on Atkin's, is to get 98% of your carbs from the vegetables allowed (depending what rung you are on), drink your weight in pounds, in ounces of water(180 pounds? 180 oz water) everyday, get plenty of sleep, since sleep deprivation leads to insulin spikes, which leads to fat storage, and use a program like FitDay to keep your percentages at 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs. Atkins is not high protein diet; It is a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. On induction, remember: no more than 4 ounces of cheese per day, no more than 3 servings (packets)of Splenda per day (other sweeteners are not allowed), no coffee, diet soda, or alcohol of any kind. Count the carbs in the splenda, because it has some (about 1 per packet)toward your daily limit. Count the carbs in eggs (about .6 for each). Watch for hidden carbs in things like cream cheese, bacon, ham, etc.
The website won't let me enter my highest weight for some reason, but it was 182 in January 2009. I did Atkin's Induction for a while, and then my gall bladder started acting up. I then went on a fat and calorie conscious plan recommended by my doctor. Now that I'm well again, I'm back on Atkin's, looking forward to moving up the rungs and through the phases.
