I am a 50 something Brit living in Spain. Both my husband and I are retired, although we´ve never been so busy in our lives.

I have had a weight problem for as long as I can remember. The only time when I was 'thin' and happy with my size was when I was in my late teens and until my baby was born when I was 24. Thinking back this was probably because of the excercise I got on dance floors at every opportunity.

The diets I have been on would fill a book, but they always resulted in gaining weight to the size and more than when I started. I have been on many programs for weight loss, including going to meetings structured like Alcoholics Anonymous, I´ve been to seminars, a famous clinic in London for eating disorders, I´ve been to hypnotists and councillors.

Sometimes I feel angry that no matter how I have tried to get help, no one had the answer to weight loss. Those in the medical world just cannot seem to agree once and for all the reason why someone just cannot reduce their size to a healthy level.

I am now embarking on Atkins as a WAL - Atkins has got to be the way to go!

Hi Michebabes, Well done on your fantastic loss.

I know this may sound crazy, but I think your calories are way too low. I've done this and my body responded by going into starvation mode. Have a look at some of the research on this, I would suggest you should be aiming for 1600 to 1800 cals a day.

I struggled for months trying to lose, but I've just come back from 5 weeks away, eating more or less what I liked (hardly any bread though), and I've lost! I've now gone back on inductuction and am losing. I wont go too low with the cals again though.

Think your pie chart analysis is good for your menu. I strive for 4 - 7% carbs, 65 - 75% fats and the protein looks after itself.

Carots - I don't think they are on induction though?

Good luck - it is a huge learning curve and it's a way of life - it's forever.

Where is everyone from?
Another Brit here, but living in Alicante, Spain, amongst the orange, lemon and pomegrante groves (not good for my Atkins), also lots of almond trees. We look out on a huge area which was sculptured millions of years ago by a glacier which left a huge lake, the lake dried up thousands of years later and left the best organic soil, the Vega Baja. The local farmers markets are fantastic as mostly everything is organic. Lots of different supermarkets are near, the French Carrefore, German Lidl and the Spanish supermarket Mercadona which has a wonderful fish counter. But I love going home to Hertfordshire, England, for a good old shop in Tesco and Asda (aka Walmart).

Calories on a low-carb diet
I believe you should aim for 60-70% (check the pie chart at the bottom of the diet calendar page).

I know how you feel, I've figure it out that I need for my 5ft 3in frame, 75 - 156 g (16 ounces) of protein a day. I had to show my husband the Atkins book to prove to him that he, for his 6ft 2in frame should be having 96 - 156 g (21 ounces) of protein a day!

Make it fun to get the balance right in your daily log... there are so many permatations to get there. You wont get bored! I just love the science of it all.
