special diets don't work
Bill, Jeri
Agree with both of you. Thanks!
No meat and no grain and no junk for me. Too bad that's just the way it is. There are so many other things in life. Like living. Live is so much easier and fun when you are not fat. From sitting in an airline seat, to crossing your legs, to going to the beach...

Saw your pictures online. Congratulations, you look great. My view is that I am not on a diet in the sense that when I reach my goal I'll quit my diet. My diet-physical-conditioning-stress-management-sleep routine is a permanent way of life. Instead, I have a lower limit. If I reach the lower limit, I'll eat more of the same. Strange, but somehow satisfying, to look at a diet as a lower limit, rather than an upper limit. I am now 175, which is 7 lb away from the high-end of normal, 20lb away from my ideal weight, and 25lb from my lower limit. Started at 283lb.

I have learned so much about my body: what works and what doesn't work. I just wish I took the responsibility to "know thyself" earlier in life.

Bill you are so on the money. No matter how bad your metabolism treats you, there is a combination of food and exercise where anyone will lose weight. For me exercise was the key. I could lose weight by diet alone, but that strategy just made me sick. For me, I needed to eat only what I needed and workout as much as possible. 800 Kcal per day, a 2 hour walk in the morning (which my dog loves), one hour on the exercise bike at night, and weights 3 times a week.

You are so right. My quest for sleep is as long as my quest for weight loss and good health. In other words, diet, physical conditioning, stress management and sleep and intertwined and subject to individual differences. In my personal case, a nightly workout (a 50 min ride on the exercise bike (no double entendre)) was important. I guess it was going to bed physically tired that did the trick.

To lose weight and be as healthy as possible, you need to find the foods, physical conditioning routine, and state of mind that you need. Do NOT seek short-term fixes. Instead come to terms with a permanent solution. It may take awhile to find what you need, as opposed to what you want. Be patient, you will be rewarded.

Begin by keeping careful records of what you eat, your exercise routine, your state of mind, your weight and how you feel.

Next, start eliminating food you do not need. This is a very difficult task. Don't give up when you cheat -- keep trying.

Find the foods you need. Ask multiple experts and do your own research. Eventually you will understand your needs. A hint for Internet searches using Google: add a space then site:gov after your search topic. For example if you want to find information about gout type

Gout site:gov

This will limit Google's results to databases of the National Institutes of Health, etc.

Find an exercise routine you can handle. Don't over do it. Start slow and build up.

Practice calmness, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, etc. Awareness and stress management are essential.

Being overweight, in poor physical condition, stressed out, suffering from food related disease (diabetes, gout, kidney stones, etc.) will ruin and shorten your life.

It's your life and your choice. The rewards are amazing.
