In my life I have been the fat kid (with glasses and braces, natch, because nature has a sense of humor), the tall and skinny guy (late high school, early college), "chubby", muscular, "well nourished" (an actual quote from one doctor's report), a little bit wide, and even once a "fat, ****** mother******" (from someone who thought I was taking too long to turn left). Usually, though, I have dropped weight pretty quickly and "wore it well" so that people didn't realize how large I was.
About five years ago I took a desk job. Since most of my previous jobs had been customer service based and even other desk jobs involved running to meetings and server rooms, this was a big change. I gained so much weight so fast that I actually got stretch marks. Not long after this I started a podcast in which I discuss geeky entertainment, so even more of my leisure time was spent sitting so I could watch the things I was reviewing.
This year, two things happened. I turned 40 and my wife and I had our first child. I really, really want to be around for as much of his life as possible, so I figure it's time. Every pound I lose may be a little more time I get to spend with my family. And besides, I'd really like to look good when I dress up as Captain America this Halloween. I have my geek cred to think of. ;)
