"we are what we eat" has always been a statement I believe to be true. For a long time my eating has not reflected anything healthy. Eating right usually lasted two or three days for me, then I was back on the bad stuff like sugar and salty snacks.
A few months ago I read a book called "Grain Brain" by David Perlmutter, MD. I bought into the "it's okay to eat grains as long as we watch the fat and sugar" the industry has been spouting for years. Finally this week I am committing to eliminating, or in the very least drastically reducing, grains. And I'm back off sugar which I have tried on and off for years. I feel better when I eat right, but I let my depression get the better of me and give up on myself to the point where I slip.
Because of getting older (68 end of Nov.) I fear I am running out of time to get to a healthy weight which will enhance my enjoyment of life now. Memory is an issue too, so taking care of my brain health is important and I will make this last-ditch effort to stave off that dreaded old-age forgetfulness.
My plan is to eat simply which means grass-fed or wild caught and lots of vegetables, nuts and reasonable fruits. In the past I have tried to eliminate flour and sugar and during those times I have always felt better. Now, with health as an additional focus, I am taking the no flour a step further and eliminating all grains. If anyone loves spaghetti sauce may I recommend steamed zucchini slices instead of pasta!
By association with a certain little 3 year old (my great grand) I am getting a little more activity in my days, plus my insurance company allows me a free gym membership. The better I feel, the more I am willing to hit the treadmill. Eating better is a "win-win" situation.
UPDATE: Two years later, finally off all grain. Sugar has nearly been eliminated, no more chips, depression is nearly gone so at the very least it is under control. So, my eating plan is going well, goal now is to get more exercise.
