Calories
If you are overweight, and have been gaining gradually, as most people who decide it's time to lose weight do, you have been consuming too many calories. Reducing the number of calories (ie, the quantity of food) that you eat by that amount will mean your weight will stabilize. To lose, you will need to reduce by even more. A 500 calorie a day deficit should lead to a pound a week of weight loss.

The first step is figuring out what you are presently eating, by writing down everything you put in your mouth. Record quantities, entering them on the site and allowing the site to calculate calories etc.

You may be surprised to see how much you are eating. Most people underestimate by 50% how much they consume.

Only by knowing what you are doing can you decide what sort of changes you can make and sustain.

Atkins
Atkins is one of the few weight-loss diets that has been so popular (and controversial) over the years that population studies have been done on it.

These studies show that many people who do low carb in general and Atkins in particular are able to maintain their loss. However, if you look at it as a crash diet for rapid short-term loss, it will no doubt turn into rapid regain as well.

Study showing walking -v- running
I used to be down on walking as exercise, but no more. Now I think one of its major unsaid benefits is that it gets people out of the house for extended periods of time when they are most bored and likely to be in the refrigerator looking for something to do.
