Long Sordid story. Have been on methotrexate for psoriasis for most of my adult life... which in turn has many side effects one of which caused early menopause and messed up hormones.

I quit smoking in 2009... and not so coincidentally my thyroid crashed, and of course gave myself license to eat anything and everything.... so I gained 20lbs too.

I had many health issues that followed including high blood pressure, poor kidney function, repeated sinus infections, allergies, dried cracked feet, vertigo, blurred vision... and more.

Who knew???? I thought that quitting smoking was supposed to improve my health... I'm not a couch potato either. I downhill ski, hike, walk, play darts and badminton, and lots of shopping ;) It's just wrong :(

I am happy to report, that I am still not smoking, quit using the methotrexate. I am using the herb Chang Shan for psoriasis but am no really sure if it is helping. Will have to try stopping it for a period to really see.

Since using fatsecret to monitor my diet, I have increased my consumption of much healthier foods, and especially fluids, and my health has been steadily improving! I really think that I have been chronically dehydrated for many years... thus causing many of my health issues.

I had actually signed up months before, but really didn't use it until recently, and I am so happy I did. It keeps me accountable and honest with myself.

I had truly lost any inkling of portion size :) Now I weigh and measure everything, and am slowly getting comfortable with knowing my portion sizes again.

jmh8662, glad I could help and hope you can work with your doc to get you feeling better.

Mysoda, I had not heard of DIM supplements until you just mentioned it and it sounds very promising.

I have been recently, for about 4 months, using Chang Shan (Himalayan hydrangea root extract). It is currently being studied as a treatment for autoimmune disorders. I have psoriasis and have been off and on immunosuppressants for most of my adult life as well as having wasted lots of money on many “snake-oil” promises. The difference with chang shan is that there is actual scientific evidience and current studies that it works. There is indication that Chang Shan can help stop immune response without suppressing the entire immune system. Smile I can’t say that is works for sure, but I just stopped taking it 2 weeks ago and am now experiencing a significant flare. I will start taking it again in a couple of weeks and see what happens.

I am most definitely going to look at the DIM as well.

I started peri at only 32 years old and it has not been pleasant. I truly feel some days like an old woman trapped in a young person’s body Sad.

I have not found that diet or exercise has made any difference at all with the symptoms. That being said, I did discover that I have been chronically dehydrated for many years (to the point of not feeling thirst anymore), so increasing my fluid intake to recommended amounts has considerably lessened my pain and improved my overall health Smile

If your hormones are abnormal due to genetics or failing thyroid, beyond normal menopause, diet can only do so much. I started bio-identical hormone treatment about 2 years ago, and feel like it has truly saved my life!

I'm not pushing BHRT, but if you feel like "the change" is really having a long term negative effect on the quality of your life, then you really need to talk to your doctor, and may want to consider it. I feel like I lost 10 years of my life because doctors failed to identify what my problem really was.

... on the positive side of that, I am now feeling MUCH better and making up for lost time! Eating healthy is not just for menopause; it is for life Smile

I took a break from dieting and was able to maintain my weight relativily well, but did find I did slip back into some unhealthy food choices.... but not ...
