To the people that think weight is all about calories. Two words. It ain't. To those who think that weight loss is the goal. Same two word answer. The excess weight is a SYMPTOM of the underlying problem, so if you only treat the symptom, you clearly don't fix the problem. The problem is metabolic disorder brought on by insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is caused by high levels of blood sugar, and I'll leave you to figure out the rest. Forget calories, forget low fat, forget trying to spend your life exercising in some futile attempt to 'balance' something your body neither knows nor cares about (calories). Eat a low carb, high fat diet, and watch everything fix itself. Don't fear the fat people. Do some study with your eyes open.

pedometer
No, and none. You cannot outrun (or outwalk) a bad diet. What you eat determines what you weigh, not how much you exercise.

Oatmeal sure spiked my blood sugar!
Forget cholesterol, it is a meaningless number that makes people sick and drug companies 35 billion a year. I am frankly astonished that you found oats to be the culprit, but at least you did, so that's a win. Eat bacon and eggs instead, be satisfied, not starving, and lose weight, because bacon and eggs won't move your blood sugar, and when your blood sugar doesn't move, you CAN'T gain weight, since there is no mechanism in your body to do so. Oatmeal MAY help with one (meaningless) part of your cholesterol, but overall all it will do is make you fatter, and raise your triglycerides and blood sugar. Bacon and eggs, none of this short cut nonsense, proper rashers, two eggs, fried in fat. Test your blood then and smile.

Low carb vs Low Calorie
Yup, do 5:2, OR do low carb. Low carb is the better choice, but 30g is ketosis low you realise? The whole concept of counting calories is a myth, based on a false assumption, that assumption being, that all calories are equal, when they clearly aren't. Either accept this, count calories and ultimately starve and fail, or abandon the dogma, eat your fill, never be hungry again, and worry only about the number of carbs you eat, not the calories.
