Not significantly overweight by any means (I've always been in the "normal" range). But I do have a chronic, serious autoimmune condition - psoriatic arthritis - and I want to achieve several things by losing those last few pounds and eating really, really well.
1. Reduce my abdominal fat to an absolute minimum (that's where I carry almost all my extra weight). Why? Because abdominal fat is particularly prone to increasing inflammation, and given that my body's immune system is out of whack and causing plenty of inflammation on its own, I figure I don't need to give it any help!
2. Reduce my "extra" risk of developing other autoimmune conditions (about 400% greater than average) by eating the best food possible.
3. Reduce my "extra" risk of developing heart problems (about double the risk I'd have otherwise) by eating the best food possible.
4. Reduce my "extra" risk of developing certain cancers (again, as much as double the risk I'd have if I was 100% healthy) by eating the best food possible.
Losing weight is almost secondary, but I felt at my absolute best when I was at the very bottom of the healthy weight range on the BMI scale. So that's where I'm headed. Not for everyone, but I believe the science and the results so far have been good. Surprisingly good, in fact.
