I had gastric band surgery a few years ago and managed to lose 30 kgs with a lot of discomfort (throwing up). Then when the surgeon relaxed the band to stop the vomiting, I began gaining weight and put back those 30 kgs that had taken me a year to lose plus 20 more! So now I am against bariatric interventions as in my case it did not work and it put my life at risk (vitamin deficiency and digestive problems plus the psychological cost.) My biggest problem is lack of motivation caused by depression but to complicate matters I had not sought help with my depression because I had gotten so used to it that it felt normal! It wasn't until I bought myself a tablet that I was introduced to te wonderful world of apps and specifically the calorie counter. The rest is history :-) 2012 is my year!

Horrible mixup of accounts - hacking?
Yesterday I went to enter my meals and was logged in a different person's account - Larry something. I don't know him, we do not share devices, we do not even have similar logins. What happened? I did a sync and my correct data showed up.

This morning I go to enter my details and some Mexican girl has entered stuff in my account erasing all my info! Suddenly I have gone from weighing some 189 kgs to 57 kgs and I am 21 years old eating 700 calories per day. What on earth? I can't erase her exercise which showed sleeping for 24 hours... And now the website is not functioning well. It won't show my details that I entered in my Android device. I suspect that the app and website have been hacked and someone is having fun at our expense.

So please check your accounts and ensure you are logged in as you, or your data will be lost and tampered with. Let me know if you have had similar problems. Thanks.

fatsecret food database
Hi ArchStanton,

There are many people online who do not do well with maths, so you will often find entries that are incorrect. You have the option of correcting the entries as I once did with the info on a can of Sprite which was way below the calories it contains because the person who entered it took the calories per 100 ml and used it for an entire can. I don't know what method you use for accessing Fat Secret. I am using the Android app which behaves totally different to the Ipad app that my boyfriend uses. So it would be hard to advise you without knowing what it is exactly that you are seeing.

Now as for the grams entries, most products have a drop down list of other measurements, e.g. grams, cups, pieces. Just play with it a bit more and you'll find out. Where no other option is listed other than the per 100 g calories, you can simply look at the product you are eating to find out the total weight and do simple math to decide how many portions more or less from the one listed you are having.

Finally, have you used the barcode reader? It is really nifty. You hold up your mobile or tablet camera facing the barcode and it tells you if it finds an entry for this product. If no entry is found, you can add it yourself - new entry. I personally find it rather intuitive to use but like I said I am using Android. I don't like the Fat Secret calorie counter online - it is hard to use, confusing as it shows me mostly American products and I live in the UK - generally it is not as well thought out as the Android calorie counter. But at least I have an option and can choose to enter my calories from the place that best works for me.

Hope you enjoy using Fat Secret and its apps and that you succeed in your goals!

Let's get going!
Surgery fills you with fluid... it will go and the stats will return to normal. Congratulations on your massive weight loss. Hope my boyfriend finds the courage to make the right choices, too. He started off well by choosing me, after all... Smile

Over Weighing yourself
Couldn't agree more! When I began in January I was too fat for even my strongest set of scales sio I had to wait till my hospital appointment to do it there. Every 3 weeks works a treat. Only time I put weight on was Easter (cheeky me celebrated both Western and Orthodox Easter a week apart so it was one long binge) and second time was due to heavy constipation due to my pain medication (stopped taking them and I am once again good.) I feel much more relaxed without weighing myself frequently and attribute my success to that. Smile

Just getting started and in need of support and tips
Weight Watchers is good but you are probably making a mistake somewhere. You really ought to talk to your group leader to find out where you are stumbling. Perhaps you have not updated your points? As you lose weight, you have less calorific needs so you need to reduce your intake in order to maintain weight loss. Points is just another name for calories... to illustrate when I began dieting here in January, my needs were 2800 kcal but now I am down to 2300 but take a bit less in order to have some leeway on celebration dates. I am happy with losing 2 kgs a month. My doctor is happy. My body is changing but not in a dramatic, scary way. I can feel my bones in certain places and the fat in my legs is now softer instead of rock hard. I love me. I love being in control of my body. The hardest fight happens in the brain. First couple of weeks are difficult, then it becomes a routine and you don't even think about it. I now avoid buying foods I had been addicted to and there is no mad dash late evenings to find a treat. It's so liberating! I recommend you to weighing yourself and do it once a month or once every 3 weeks. Tell yourself you are not dieting, you are just eating sensibly, and try to fill your days with other pkeasures. You can do it! Smile Go girl go!
