I am a 43 year old female, artist graphic designer and we (hubby and I)run our own small business. I have high maintenance kids, Son, 12 yrs. with Asperger's, and an anorexic daughter, 15 yrs., that is finally at a healthy weight for the first time in 6 years and doing great. Eating with her to motivate her and not *diet* was hard, and I put on more weight instead of maintaining mostly due to my own eating problems because the therapist says I self medicate with food. So, this journey to get me to a healthy weight and healthy eating habits will be a struggle.

Self-medication with food makes me feel happy, a sense of pleasure, feel good when a rarely do. Food = satisfaction. Food has been a surrogate for real emotions. I lack confidence in myself and therefore rarely have I allowed myself true happiness no matter how much I have tried, even know I know to some extent this is true. I was abused by my adopted uncle as a child and not supported by my grandmother when I told her. Always made poor choices in dating many proved abusive in one way or another. Certainly not healthy. Later, my first marriage failed, custody battle. Each time food was the easy choice. Matter-of-fact it was to the point where body image as *fat* and *unattractive* was preferable and made it that much easier to eat.

I have been down this path before and always I have relented in the past and gave in to the satisfaction that food brings me. This is my first time on FS. This time I am here to for support and to hold myself accountable. This time I want it gone and to go away.

Learning to eat low-carb
diet soda should not kick you out of ketosis. However, I lost more weight when I got rid of soda and sugar substitutes drank water and just ate meat and veggies (mostly leafy greens) and stopped trying to make my food look like everyone else's (esp the bread family of things). I also removed all the *goodies* from the house and after a while I did not miss them.

It's NOT a Diet
I hate the word DIET in the context that it has been twisted into. It is so negative and to tell people, "I am on a diet." I have actually had people look am me in the past and tell me I needed to be on a diet and not my Dr and not meant nicely. When I started here on FS I said this is a lifestyle change and no turning back. ANd I have pretty well done that. There have been a few bumps in the road but nothing that you don't just get back on the horse and ride it. Continue to climb that mountain. Making a better, healthier me is my life not a short term fad that I would lose a little then retreat and fatten up again. I don't believe in cheat days really any more. Cheating feels again negative as do other allowances that turn into excuses. Not that I do not feel I can go *off plan* but I just do not want it to become a mental state that cheating etc on myself if ok. I want a positive mental state not something that might make me feel terrible at the end of the day. And eating off plan often leads to gastronomical distress for me as well, as I have IBS as well - which only ends up back in the negative zone and a mental low.
