To use your vernacular; Tone is Tone.
From: http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/glossary=muscletone -
Synonym(s)muscle tonus, myotonus
Definition(s)The state of activity or tension of a muscle beyond that related to its physical properties, that is, its active resistance to stretch. In skeletal muscle, tonus is dependent upon efferent innervation. Definition from: MeSH via Unified Medical Language SystemThis link leads to a site outside Genetics Home Reference. at the National Library of Medicine
A state of partial contraction that is characteristic of normal muscle, is maintained at least in part by a continuous bombardment of motor impulses originating reflexly, and serves to maintain body posture. ieGod - I don't totally disagree with you. But please don't read into my comments what you want it to say so you can rant...
I never said "build muscle". I said muscle tone and density. And, I said over a period of time. Which varies by person based on several factors I am not going to go into since they are different with each person. I also said they lost "very little weight", not that "the scale didn't change".
My point is the goal should be overall fitness based on Body fat %, and clothing size. Weight loss is a byproduct of good habits.
And, YES! I am a CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER and have been successful for a long time.

starvation mode
I don't normally post on this subject, but I feel really strongly about the "myth". It's NOT a myth! It just works differently than most people think. I am a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and a Certified Lifestyle & Weight Management Coach. It's not so much "Starvation" as it is "over-restricted calorie intake". I have worked with several clients who were on highly restricted calorie diets (less than 850 Kcals/day) and they would lose the first few pounds then stop. And, they would gain body fat %. WHY? BMR is NOT static. It will change for each person based on age, fitness level and muscle mass. If you eat less than your body's BMR requirement for an extended period (usually between 30 and 45 days) your body WILL start to slow it processes to conserve it's fat stores. The results are fatigue, moods swings, restless sleep, changes in bowel movements, Etc. Get the point? Once I got these clients back on a balanced diet with adequate calorie intake and exercise plan, their fitness levels increased over time. Body fat levels started to go down. And, they got smaller. Notice I didn't mention weight loss. As muscle density increased, they lost very little weight while getting a much more toned and trim physique. This is my real life experience. Not some junk I read on the internet by someone trying to sell me something.
