50'ish, widowed mother of two young teen girls. Had to start working full-time and although I lost about 8 pounds at first, due to the stress involved, I have since gained @ 15 lbs due to the stress and the candy dish on my desk. Am heavier than I've ever been. So when the new pants started feeling very uncomfortable, I decide I had to finally get serious about my health. I'm an apple shape as opposed to a pear. so all my fat was going to my stomach & I read about the dangers to one's internal organs from being crowded and pressured by fat. For my girls sake,I can't let my health deteriorate. They lost their birth parents for whatever reason. they lost their dad to an incurable disease. They won't lose their mom to something within her control. So I will eat healthy, watch my calorie intake and find an exercise routine that works for me, plus I will avoid eating a piece of candy every time somebody at work dips their hand into the company candy dish that has to sit on my desk,

Work outs
If you want to mix it up try some yoga if you haven't already. I started because of a bad back that I was tired of dealing with so I just wanted to stretch it out. Well, little did I know that it would work my arms (great for triceps) as well as my core. And I have found so many muscles in my legs and glutes that I didn't know I had, little ones that I can distinquish quite clearly from their neighbors. But I seem to crave it now and am looking for more advanced classes. I was feeling terrible last week due to allergies and/or cold and went because I knew it would help clear up my sinuses and my muscles needed the stretch and at the end of class is 5 mins of mindless relaxation.

measurements
I too like to see the stats and graphs. I love both those ideas, i had looked to see how to do the mini goals and ended up using my journal. I also think a calories avoided tracker would be another nice motivator. you could see what your greatest temptations are and reward yourself with a nice stat when you make the conscious decision not too eat it. like a donut from the two boxes of donuts people decided to be "nice" and "treat" us to when they came for meetings at work.

Confession Time...what's your secret?!?!?!?
oh yes I know the feeling. recently, i've been ib contact with some old school friends, I graduated much longer ago. I was not sorry to move away from some unpleasant memories and never had any desire to go to reunions. but these were people I grew up with, they had a small get together, I couldn't make. really like the people and I'm enjoying connecting again over email, have added a picture of them to my desk as motivation for weight loss, all us women look about the same the guys stayed slimmer. but I do hope to have reached my goal when i see them again. motivation comes from many sources and i nee all I can get.

Exercise at the office?
I added the stair thing also. I'm on the 2nd floor the mail is on the 1st, but it never comes at the same time so I go up first and then do about 3-5 sets of flights everytime I go to check, which can be 4 times a day some times. I also started parking on the first floor and further in the parking lot so I have to do even more stairs and I also stand often. Now when I have to stand all day long for some tedious copying or something I just remember I'm burning more calories then sitting.

I love coffee!!!!!
okay I was a diet coke fanatic and it was an addicting drug. still not a coffee person, but now a tea person for my morning pick up. only 2 points to share.

1. remember coffee is not a water hydration replacement, a friend became dehydrated and in the hospital from using coffee as her main fluids everyday, --- it dehydrates you, don't forgo your H2o!
2. some people especially as you age, can have embarrassing medical issues from too much caffeine --- so just as tbruns said moderation is the key.
ps: my dehydrated friend would kill everybody at the office if she didn't have her joe, so I'm all for it for her & any others of similar persuasion. Wink
