Hey Atkins people - why lie?

As an old school (read that as before he died) Atkins follower, I can tell you that the products and the actual doctor part are two different things. When he passed away the medical part pretty much went away and they turned into what I know refer to as the slim fast plan. I seem to recall his children kept the food business but they were not ever involved in the actual practice. It is all about the money now, it didn't used to be that way.

Dr. Atkins was against processed foods. I learned about eating whole, unprocessed foods while on it. I ate healthier than I had ever eaten in my entire life while on it. I'd dare say even healther than what I'm doing now with Nutrisystem because I am using convenience packaged foods along with my whole foods.

I was already into the lifestyle changes when the bars and shakes started coming out. They were not for phase 1 originally, they didn't recomend them for most phases of the diet and they did warn people that it could cause them to stall and instead encouraged us to eat our veggies and proteins (but say away from high fats and nitrates).

I don't usually track at Fatsecret, but I do have an account and check in from time to time. I saw this thread and thought about how silly it is for someone to feel the need to bash an aspect of another plan, especially when that aspect is small and optional. Despite that, I decided to respond to this particular post in the thread.

The actual Atkins plan is still all about whole, natural foods. As with any plan, people can choose to incorporate artificial sweeteners and the Atkins products, but they are considered optional snack items, and are limited by the plan for those who do choose to use them. Many of us don't use them, and even the Atkins forum nutritionist and moderator will advise people to be moderate about using them, and to cut them out completely if they cause difficulties such as slowed/stalled weight loss. There is nothing "Slim-Fast" about Atkins. Just because the company makes the products available doesn't mean they are a required part of the plan. They are certainly frowned upon as meal replacements by Atkins, as well. That's nothing like Slim-Fast.

The latest Atkins book, "The New Atkins For A New You" was written by very qualified people (two MD's and a PhD) committed to furthering Dr. Atkins' excellent approach. The book builds on the science that Dr. Atkins used, and does not stray from the core of the program - fresh, whole foods including meats, eggs, lots of non-starchy vegetables and a plan that helps each individual find his or her own carb tolerances for weight loss and weight management.

As for the products themselves, they have been tested with regard to their impact on blood sugar and insulin. So, many of the people who choose to use them do find that they do not interfere with their plan. They use them as occasional snacks. For those of us who don't use them, it's not an issue at all, since people aren't expected to use them.
