I struggled with weight my whole life before college. I was never extremely heavy (my most was around 165) but I always felt pressure to be thin from my family, friends, the media, etc. I felt like I could never reach that expectation so I never tried much besides crash diets. Several years ago, I decided to love my body by eating healthy and finding something active that I enjoyed. I fell in love with hiking because it could include two other things I'm passionate about: dogs and photography. I was still mostly lazy but because I ate healthy (for the most part) I dropped down to about 130 and hovered in that range for a few years. In October 2011 I decided I would love to have a beach body and thought it couldn't be that hard. I began working out diligently (minus December) and I've kept at it because it is good for my body, but I've not seen much change in the way of soft spots. Despite Jillian Michaels and hiking and the fitness center in variations up to six days per week, my body looks mostly the same. I won't give up... maybe I need to learn to love the soft spots instead.

Soreness in abs
I know this isn't what you'd like to hear, but I would say if it is something that concerns you, it might be the best idea to ask your doctor or a personal trainer if that resource is available to you. Most likely, if you listen to someone on these forums, you will go with the answer you want to hear, which may not be given by a professional but someone just like you and I. When it concerns your well-being, you want to be more careful.

Why isn't this working for me?
So, the very basic fundamentals of weight loss is Calories In = Calories Out. I am 26 and 132lbs. My goal is to look good in a bikini. For the last six months, I have been working out at least 4x per week but usually 5x or more. I do Jillian Michaels videos, strenuous hiking, long walks and/or elliptical training. I do not have a HRM but I make sure I am sweating. Each workout is at least 20 minutes (hiking at least 1.5 hours). I am eating a pretty healthy diet but splurge on candy every few days without overeating. For the last month or so I have been using the calorie counter to keep track and I eat, on average, 500 calories LESS than I expend. Even with room for error, I should be losing weight and toning up. I am noticing more muscle, but I am gaining weight on the scale and my clothes are getting too tight. My body is not transforming into this beautiful womanly shape either. My butt is getting flat, despite the hiking, lunges and leg curls. My thighs are getting big. My back is still soft and flabby, despite strength training. I can't afford a personal trainer and I don't know what else to do. I don't really NEED people to tell me I look good, but of course I would like to hear something after all this effort. Yet, no one in my circle of acquaintances has noticed a change or complimented my body (I give compliments freely and I do notice them giving compliments to others). Can anyone help? Be blunt, be harsh, whatever.

Calories In = Calories Out???
I have been going at it for months. I started working out (for the first time in my life) in October 2011. My goal: to look great naked, so that means losing a little bit of excess fat and toning my muscles without building them too much. Excluding the month of December, I have been diligently following my diet. I eat a healthy, wholesome balance of protein, fat and carbs. Maybe I could use more protein if what I hear is true, that you should eat a gram of protein per pound of body weight (I get less than 100g per day). Otherwise, I eat healthy things that I enjoy and occasionally (1-2x/week)allow myself cheat meals (like, I had french toast for breakfast when I would normally eat eggs, spinach, greek yogurt, etc.). I'm baffled because I have not lost weight. The number on the scale isn't a huge deal because up until a few weeks ago, the look of my body was improving. What's happening now is that I seem to be puffing up again in all the areas I'm trying to tone (inner tube and thighs) and I'm definitely gaining weight. I keep very careful track of everything I eat including condiments, and on average I eat 500 calories less than I expend (1300 in, 1900 out). I do a 20-40 minute Jillian Michaels workout some days and go hiking for 1-3 hours on other days to equal 5-6 days per week with a day or two of rest. Occasionally I will go for a brisk hour-long walk as a replacement for one of those two. Outside of working out, I am a student, so I spend a lot of time sitting and walking casually. Why am I suddenly blowing up like a balloon??
