I'm 58 yr old male. I had an angina attack and angioplasty 3 yrs ago. I work nights in an office and I sleep in the day. I've done this for 10 yrs and I've adapted quite well. There's no 24 hr gym handy and I don't have room for exercise machines and I ain't going jogging at 5 am in my neighbourhood! As I aged it was getting more difficult to drop more than 10 or 15 lbs. Weight watchers worked pretty good, but I'd put the weight back on after reaching my goal (or more likely - quitting;-) I like this fatsecret site and application because when I reach my goal, this time, I can increase the calories per day until I maintain the weight I want. For me, with my heart issues, this is a major lifestyle change! As I write this, I've been a member here for 2 months and I've lost 15 lbs. For the first time, I haven't hit a plateau in my weight loss. The fatsecret tracker works beautifully and I can manage my weight loss, effectively!
I wish everyone here, success!

Blackberry Issues
On my iPod, I don't have to sink, I just refresh the page by going back to the menu and back to the same diary. When I check the web page it's updated. Sometimes I use the both together: iPod and web site. Reloading the page works on both for me.

How Do You Avoid Cheating?
Let's face facts. We diet for a while and then at some point in the diet we cheat. Fair enough. We're all human. What I've found are certain situations or events that seem to invite cheating or make it difficult to stay on course. What I propose is that we all reveal one circumstance that makes you cheat and how you deal with it. In so doing, you will be giving helpful tips to others who might have been in the same boat at some time.

Let me begin:

Usually, I find that if I haven't pre-planned my dinner meal then I am very likely to improvise something that is not balanced or fatty. I set up my meal plan on the Fat Secret website and copy meals - say from the previous Monday. Then the night before, I fine tune it. This gives you a general outlook for the week and you can tweak things in advance. It works for me.

Anybody else have similar tips?

Portion sizes
to terrylab: I've found that what causes a plateau is when you eat too few calories or go too long between meals. At some point your body decides that you are starving and starts to shut down systems that can be sacrificed. The result is that you lose energy, and the numbers on your scale stall. It is at this point that most people panic. What you have to do, then is reset your body's systems. I usually go off diet for about 3 days and the body should start burning more calories again. I space my meals and snacks no less than 2 hours apart and no more than 3 hours apart. This keeps your blood sugar levels up and reduces your chances of repeating the above scenario. There is another way in which you can plateau. If you exercise too much. Let's say you eat 1200 calories and burn about 2400 calories one day.
That gives you a 1200 calorie deficit. Remember though, your body needs to keep its systems running and if it gets fooled into thinking it is starving, then you will plateau again. I don't exercise these days, due to work shedule, so you would be best to get advise on calories eaten vs calories burned in terms of ratio from someone more qualified than I. I'm no expert but I hope this answers your question, somewhat. Success to all!

FS - so addicting!! Anyone else having problems turning this off?
It is as much a struggle to remain motivated, sometimes, as it it to lose the weight. If you notice, most of the members here are on "their own diet" and some are new to dieting altogether. The reason there are so many scam artist out there who prey upon upon people with excess avoirdupois is that most people aren't nutritionists. FS is a site where the dieter can share information with others, share their feelings, frustrations, hopes and desires. Family members who are not also dieting cannot truly relate to the sacrifices being made and can even become frustrated. FS is a support group and that can't be bad. We all tend to obsess sometimes, and better here, with friends than in front of the TV with your fatty snack of choice. Success to all!

Clothes size vs. actual size
I'm glad that I don't have to go through all that trouble that the women must endure for clothing sizes. I'm finally getting into my old pants and I will not purchase new ones until I get to my goal. I admit that I will be out of style but I don't care about style - It's comfort that I like! No more pinching at the waist, no more struggling to do up the last notch on the belt. I may be somewhat impatient getting to my goal but I surely enjoy the comfort of loose clothing on my way there - especially in the summer heat. Success to all!
