I'm almost 56 years old, married, and soon to retire. My doctor---and now my dentist---have recently commented on my weight increase! (Yes, the clothes aren't fitting and I have no energy, but a girl can still be in denial.) According to the BMI and Weight Watcher guidelines I need to lose about 25 lbs. I don't exercise anymore, but I used to work out and enjoyed it when I was younger. I like to walk and garden, so I suppose I will start there. (Does shopping count?) My other favorite things to do: read, go to movies,---and bake. I collect cookbooks and enjoy baking anythng sweet. Maybe I chose to try to follow the South Beach because I'm a glutton for punishment...no pun intended.

what am I doing wrong?
I'm in a similiar situation. I've done Phase 1 a few times over the years and have always lost at least 4 lbs in the first week and another couple in the second week. This time I am really struggling. (I had a party---and went a bit nuts, had sangria, etc.) That set me back, but I am still in slooooow mode here. I think, though, that my usual diet is always a bit South Beach--not many carbs, lower in fat. That might be my problem. Not enough of a change this time around to create a big loss. Is your usual diet kind of similiar to what you are doing? Just a thought. Stay with it, though. One morning you might be shocked when you drop 2 or 3. ---Gabbi

Any Teachers out here? Now's the time to go clothes-shopping!!
Thanks for the tip---wish I had lost a bit more! I never buy clothes when my weight is up, but that's not a good thing when you need to go to something and have nothing exciting to wear. --Gabbi

HOW DO WE DEAL WHEN THE WORLD NOTICES US????
As a mother, it seems, everything you do or say is magnified in the eyes of the child. We set the bar for everything the world measures our children by in one way or another---certainly unfair. My own daughter watched me as I struggled to keep my weight under control as she was a teenager (stunned that I would come home at lunchtime and do a Jane Fonda tape in my underwear and return to work! I never perspired in those days---and she marveled at that, too!) For years I was successful, but then over the years the weight accumulated and she knew it was a real problem in my mind. I never mentioned her appearance or teenage weight fluctuations, as I learned from a dear friend that a mother's vision of her child's appearance should always be accepting. My friend ate in defiance of her mother's "rules" for dieting, sneaking cupcakes in the early years and in later years leaving her mom's holiday table (of sugarfree jello) just to stop off and get a Sara Leee cake---and eat the whole thing! So I learned to temper my remarks to my daughter, but she learned the lessons of appearance and acceptance by my actions and attitudes although I never said anything that I thought might harm her. So, in the end, it's more about how we show our girls that we are not our sizes or our scale numbers.

back tracking?
Is it possbile to go back and fill in the diet items for days passed? I weighed in and journaled but neglected to record my food in-take everyday. I hand write them in my own notebook and thought I could just enter them when I had time, but it keeps adding to today's food items. What am I doing wrong? Or is this the price to pay for slacking on the food list?Embarassed
