I am a 33 year young science geek living in western Canada, doing ecological research for the university in my city. During the summer I am very active, quadding, hiking, digging soil pits, sampling soils, planting trees, pulling ATVs out of the muskeg..etc. During the winter I am a typical computer nerd, entering and analyzing the summer data, reading papers and basically sitting on my butt. I tend to gain a bit of weight each winter due to the more sedentary lifestyle I lead. I usually don't lose ALL the weight I gained each winter so it's been adding up each year. I would like to lose about 10-15 Lbs to get myself back on track.

UPDATE Oct 12, 2009
I am into my 11th week of pregnancy and have gained about 2 lbs. My belly is already starting to protrude a little but I am determined to stay within a reasonable weight gain. I have been exhausted this first trimester but I am hoping to get more active in the second. I have been walking for about 25 minutes every day though, and will get back into doing yoga now that it's a little safer for the pregnancy. Eventually I will start a prenatal yoga class I think, because I am not sure if I will be able to do most of the ashtanga poses when my belly is a lot bigger LOL.

Good health to us all!

which is better??
I agree with the others who said that the treadmill burns more calories (in a shorter amount of time). I like it because when I started running, I would only have to jog for about 10-15 minutes (that was my limit!!). I started to see results pretty quickly though, even with that little amount of time (although I ran every day and slowly increased duration by 2 minutes on a weekly basis). I think the others are right though, if you like pedaling better, get a recumbent because that is what you are going to use! NO sense buying a treadmill if you hate it. If you haven't really used either, then see if you can try out a gym close to you for a week (most quality gyms will allow you to test their facilities before you sign up for a contract, so go, without signing up). I think that is the best way to figure out whether you will use the equipment or not! Cheers!

dizzy and tired
Is it winter for you, where you live? I was feeling that way too and my mom got me a SAD light (for Seasonal Affective Disorder). I now have energy to do things! It's amazing! (It's because the sunrise here is at 8:44am, and the sunset is at 4:30pm... It's so dark, I just wanted to hibernate all the time!)
