My husband and I live near the ocean in South Florida. I'm currently "between" jobs and think this is the perfect time to get my health and fitness back on track. I do freelance work on yachts and often have to cook. Therefore I'm always in the kitchen trying out new ideas and recipes which obviously isn't the best idea for weight loss. I also love learning about wine and beer so I suppose I'll be looking for a new hobby. Why is it the things that are the most enjoyable are bad for you???

UPDATE: No longer between jobs. I'm working, supposedly part-time, but seems more like full-time, on a local sight seeing boat. The hours are very long at 10 to 14 per shift, so eating according to plan is going to become a different kind of challenge.

Are Carbs Really That Bad
One of the reasons some people go on a low carb way of eating is because of the way that the body "burns" macronutrients for fuel. Carbohydrates are the easiest for a person's body to use so the more carbs you feed your body the more it will store if it has an adequate amount. Now, the next easiest macronutrient to be used as fuel to keep you going is fat. So, if your body has depleted all of it's carb stores it's going to start burning fat for fuel and that's what we low carb people like. The 3rd and final macronutrient is protein and regardless of what type of way of eating anyone chooses, it's pretty universal we want to keep all of our protein because that's what our muscles are made of.
Some low carb people eat very few carbs and there are even some who do strive to be as low carb as possible, but then there are those who are able to lose or maintain on many more. It's completely YMMV thing.
Personally, I have found by way of low carbing, that I have a lot of sensitivity to wheat which I would have never suspected if I hadn't taken out of my diet.

food not in the journal
When you go to your food diary you can input new foods next to the area where it says "or find a food" just to the right of that there's a New Item you can click on. Then you just put the nutritionals in where they go.

How do you count net carbs from the Nutrition Facts Label
You can let fatsecret do it for you. If you go over to your toolbox and click on My Account then scroll all the way to the bottom and you're given choices as to Food Diary Nutrition Facts. Check the Net Carbs box and then go to save and click on that. When you go to your Diet Calendar Net Carbs should be figured out for you automatically as long as you are entering your foods.

Haven't lost a thing...I'm so frustrated!
I can totally sympathize with you. I lost 7 pounds the first week and that's it. I started measuring shortly after and I've lost 5 inches this past week, but no weight. I didn't measure when I first started so I don't know what the inches would have been if I had. All I know is I feel so much better all around that weight loss is kind of becoming a secondary benefit of this way of life/eating. Because of my overall feeling of well being it is keeping me motivated to stick to it. Today, I also made the decision to cut the carbs even more and up the fat. I've read in several places it might help. I'm sure others would disagree with this method, but I'm going to give it a week and see what happens.
Are you drinking a lot of water? It helps some, but I drink around 100 ounces a day and it isn't helping on the scale, but I guess it could be with the tape measure.
Try not to go too crazy yet. It's still early.
