Former gym rat who let life interfere. Until the last couple of years, I was always in top shape, only ever struggling with losing the occasional 5 pounds. Then life happened, the gym became a source of stress, and I just quit everything and got into the habit of eating fast food. Now here I am, 30 lbs heavier - I currently way the same amount I did the day I went into labor with my son!

I am determined to re-adopt the habits I have had for most of my life. My challenges have been raising a teenage son and failing to plan/budget - which results in ordering from the $1 menu in the drive-thru at McDonalds, and working 8am-6pm weekdays. But my motto used to always be: you make time for that which is important to you. I'm re-adopting it.

how often should i do squats/lunges?
k7yk said it pretty darn well. You can't spot reduce, and your muscles need time to recover. I would say you don't need to train any muscle group more than 2x a week, maybe 3x if you are doing very light weight. But it's better to go with a moderate weight and stay in the 1-2x a week per muscle group. Diet (make sure you're getting enough protein!), enough sleep, and plenty of water go hand in hand with building lean muscle.

And you've got fantastic motivation!

What percent is considered low-carb?
I think low carb is when the percentage is equal to or less than the protein percentage of your diet. I'm not sure how other people define it - some people might say it's not eating any carbs. In the past I had very good results with a 40% carbs, 40% protein and 20% fat - but, to put it bluntly, that diet sucked rocks, talk about zero enjoyment! I did it for a fitness competition, but couldn't hack it after 8 weeks. Went from a size 8 and a 4 within the first month. This was probably in 2002 or 3, things have changed since then!

Need Breakfast Ideas
I eat breakfast at my desk too. My standby is 4 tbsp plain rolled oats, add water, nuke for 90 seconds, then add a scoop of vanilla protein powder (I aim to add about 10 g protein), some cinnamon to taste, and a tbsp of huckleberry honey (local honey - helps me head my allergies off at the pass!). Sometimes I'll eat a banana or an apple with it as well. Works well during the week ... my problem times are when I'm at home!
