I've been doing a lot of research on diet and exercise for losing weight and managing diabetes. So far, the best I have found is a program called "primal blueprint." It's a low carb diet that focuses on eating healthy proteins and fats, eliminating grains and legumes from your diet, and eating healthy vegetables.
The exercise guidance is very reasonable and comes from a world class athlete that completely changed his exercise routine from "chronic cardio" to exercising at lower heart rates along with "explosive movements" to burn fat, build reasonable muscle tissue, and keep a healthy immune immune system.
I'll soon be adding the resistance exercise and explosive sprints to my own exercise routine.

Everyday Goals: Burn 1000 calories exercising. Keep daily calorie intake below 2200. Keep Carbohydrate intake below 100 grams (50 is better.)
