Hi. I, too, am newly diabetic. Many people have mentioned Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book. It's eye-opening. Since I have followed his recommendations (or tried to) my blood sugars have greatly improved. Not sure I can give up treats permanently as he recommends, but the positive feedback in terms of blood sugar control really helps me want to make better choices.

Giving up sweets will come easy in time.Just work at it.Find recipes online that are low in carbs. Your taste buds will change.

For me, a real find has been the Atkins bars. There are a lot of flavors, and they are almost all high fiber, high protein, low carb (especially if you calculate net carbs), and low sugar. The only exceptions appear to be the breakfast bars that look like granola, which have a lower protein count. Some of my favorites are brownies, coconut bars (like Mounds), peanut clusters (like Payday), cinnamon bars, strawberry almond . . .
