I'm new to this and am a little worried about eating so much fat. I've been eating grain free for awhile, but not high fat. Won't this raise you're cholesterol? I have Fibromyalgia so my exercise is limited sometimes to be able to burn it off. Any advise would be helpful.

Hi, I see no-one's replied but the first thing I want to say is that not all fat is equal! If you follow Paleo right, and use lean meats, fish, nuts, avocados etc you'll be getting a lot of good fats which are high in the Omegas etc.

I had my cholesterol tested about 5 months after starting Paleo and although my overall cholesterol was a smidge high (5.1) that was because my good cholesterol was very high - this had the result that my overall ratio was 1.3 which is the top end of the Very Low Risk group. And because I don't eat much fish (other than canned tuna) I add dairy into my diet - trying where possible to have low fat, but it's still bumping up the saturates. So don't panic about the high fat content.

Fat isn't an issue, so long as you're eating 'natural' fat ie; that found on your meat, authentic paleo calls for no dairy and no butter, unless you're churning it yourself, or drinking it from a hormone free grass fed cow, which lets be honest not too many of us have access to. Be careful the quantity of nuts you eat, not all nuts are nuts (peanuts) and nuts will add up very quickly in fat,it is healthy fat but don't over do it! The fat you get in avocados, coconuts etc is good fat, eat up and enjoy, eating Paleo is not a 'low fat' diet, enjoy your steak, (grass fed) etc.

I would say a bigger issue is sugar. If you're lacking time to burn it off, be careful that you're not overdoing the high sugar fruits like bananas, better snack on berries, especially now that its summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

I don't focus a ton on eating fat, I just don't avoid it like we were all once taught to do. I freely cook my food in olive oils and coconut oil. I put full fat coconut milk in my coffee and eat my fare share of bacon. I also eat 2 eggs every morning, which has long been associated with high cholesterol and after 2 years of this, I had blood work done and my Dr. told me that if she had more patients like me, she'd be out of work. I had exceptionally perfect good and bad cholesterol levels for my age. So I would suggest that you go get your annual physical, and request your blood work. Come back in a year and let's see the results. Smile

Wonderful posts everyone. I am new to paleo and have cut back completely on grains and so far only have about an ounce of milk in my one cup of tea in the morning. I look forward to the support and encouragement I am sure I will find here! Have a wonderful day folks!
