Good morning, everyone!

Early day today...
I have a full day ahead: I'm babysitting my adorable year-old niece all day and going to have to get a lot of work done while she's napping (keeping my fingers crossed that she naps!!) I'm way behind on a manuscript that I have a strict deadline for, so, needless to say I'm feeling just a little stressed this morning. But I am determined to stay on track and keep it low-carb. Honestly, low carb eating has become second nature for me, so I'm not too worried about it. I just hope my sister has something low carb in her refrigerator so I don't starve while I'm watching her little one! LOL!

Leikoa- I hope that you're feeling better today.
I giggled when I read your question because tomato sauce is so common here in the US. But here's an attempt at an explanation: Tomato sauce is somewhere between stewed tomatoes (without the big tomato chunks in the can) and pasta sauce. It usually comes in a can and is rather smooth like pasta sauce, but I don't think you would want to cover your spaghetti with it without mixing it with something. Heinz or Hunt's both make a good tomato sauce. Here's what it looks like: Tomato sauce.

Jaime- I tried your Runkeeper app yesterday and I think I like it better than my Jog Log. I think it's a little more accurate, so thanks!

Myrna- I hope you're not as tired today. Take care of yourself! Oh yeah, I think you should patent your restaurant idea ASAP because it's genius!

Sia Great job on 20 net carbs yesterday!

Well, I'm out of time...I'll try to log on while I'm at my sister's house sometime today. Have a good one, everyone!Very Happy

A good Wed morning to all, you've made it to hump day! AND, Mother Nature take note! Spring has arrived, get with the program will ya lady????? This is the official memo, read it! Spring is warmer temps, flowers starting to bloom, the stuff falling from the sky is in big drops, not these blasted flakes you've been sending us. Why do I have to explain this to you?

So nice of the different members to say I'm a welcome addition, thank you for the support and encouragement you've shown during the time I've been posting, it's been a humungous help to me. I've learned a great deal sharing space with you all, things as simple as drinking more water and what a difference it makes. I guess you could say you inspire me to inspire, your help, praise and reinforcement has lead me down the path of success to not only lose weight but towards a better life, not a small feat by anyone's standards. All of the members here who are serious about this new way of life and bettering themselves should be proud of how they boost the spirits of others. It has always been and I suspect will continue to be, a team effort.

Wanting a better life, wanting to be healthier is like quitting smoking, your either ready or your just kidding yourself, you can and will succeed if you want it. No amount of whining will make it happen. YOU are the only one that can do it. It's not a short term fix, it's a life long war! Sometimes we all need to call upon more of the troops to help us over the hill, so many demons standing on the crest of one very big mountain need to be tamed now and again. Temptation is everywhere but together we can knock every one of them to the ground because we know and believe it's important to slay that dragon. I'm worth the effort and so are you! If I should slip and fall I know I can count on many of you to help me up again, if you fall I'll be there with outstretched hand to pull you too. There appear to be some we might have to drag with both hands and both feet for a short period of time, they're worth it too so come on, grab an extremity, the battle isn't over till the fat lady sings. If there aren't any fat ladies left who's going to do the singing?

Good Monring everyone -

I never knew a person's sinuses could feel like they are on fire - I've got such a heavy chest and sinus cold I'm heading to the doctor this morning - had to leave work early Monday and stayed home all day yesterday, but I've got to be ready to work again tomorrow somehow. On Monday night I took a big swig of Nyquil, and when it was too late, looked at the bottle and find it is full of high fructose corn syrup - I wonder if that was art of what turned the scale in the wrong direction on Monday.

Or it may be that as Sunkeeperhas suggested, I'm just a little too high on my carbs and when I look at other people's diet charts, I'm still eating more calories than most.

Question for everyon - if you lose weight by dropping yoru calories under 1000 a day, doesnt that lead to a slower metabolism and regaining the weight eventually unless you stay at under a 1000 forever? Isn't lo carbing supposed to help our bodies lose weight without having to go so ow on the calories? I'm confused about this. I don't want to make things even worse for myself ....

Sunkeeper - thank you SO MUCH for your encouragement yesterday. I looked for the coconut oil candy recipe you mentioned and I'm just not sure what you are referring to - there is one on page 5 of the recipe thread that Christie posted called :

Wifezilla Abi Fae's Fat Bombs
• 8 oz unsweetened almond butter (or natural sugar-free peanut butter or other nut butter)
• 8 oz raw coconut butter (Artisana brand is excellent) OR virgin coconut oil (take 1 cup unsweetened coconut and 1 tbsp melted coconut oil and blend in food processor for homemade coconut butter)
• 1 stick butter
• 2 Tbsp butter
• 1 bar of 85% cocoa chocolate or high cocoa chocolate chips
• Sweetener of choice to taste (I use half splenda and half eryhritol)

Is this what you were suggesting?

Again - like you said in your post this morning - caring for and encouraging each other is powerful stuff - you've really given me a boost. thank you. thank you. thank you.

Just checking in. Rchap, my nutritionist told me that going 1000 cals or lower even for short periods is not good. It causes your body to move into starvation mode, slowing metabolism and eventually causing your body to "eat itself" (breaking down your muscle tissue and organs for protein). Yes lo-carb is supposed to help u lose weight without going to low-calorie extremes. Atkins and nutritionist agree that women need between 1500-1800 cals a day to lose weight safely. Hope this helps.

Rchap - I think the Coconut Oil Candies are these:
Simple Coconut Oil Chocolate Candies
• 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
• 1/4 cup Cocoa Powder (raw cocoa powder is preferred)
• 2 Tbsp Splenda
• 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
• ¼ cup chopped Macadamia nuts
Melt the coconut oil and add the Splenda. Whisk and add the cocoa powder. Whisk occasionally while pouring into a silicone ice cube tray or silicone mini muffin tray. Makes 14. Cool for 30 minutes in the fridge or freezer.
Note: Time varies depending on how hot the coconut oil was when you started. If the oil is only just reached its melting stage, these will set in as little as 15 minutes.
Recipe makes 14, 1 candy per serving
Fat 9.81, Carbs 1.20, Fibre .71, Net Carbs .49, Protein .49, Calories 88.71

As far as calories, when I'm Fat Fasting, (which I'll do for 3 - 5 days), I do the first few days at 1000 calories. My nutritionist said that for that short of a period, it's okay. I don't do it terribly often and I don't go over 5 days at 1000 calories.
For the rest of the time, I don't seem to lose weight if I don't keep an eye on my caloric intake.
I'm not super strict about it and most days, I try to keep it between 1200 - 1300 a day. Some days, a little more, some days a little less.

Rchap - Like toni, I try to keep between 1200-1300 a day. I lowered my RDI to 1400 on FS so that I had a ceiling to bump up against. I haven't read all the other advice you may have gotten, but I did take a peek at your food diary and saw some areas that might cause problems. First, your protein consumption seems a bit high, even though you are eating fatty meat. Excess protein is converted by the body into carbohydrate. That was a shocker to me, but I have found that lowering my protein and eschewing the fattier meats (when possible) helped me get the scale moving. Next, get yourself some greens! Have a big fluffy salad most days. Lettuces are low carb and make it hard to reach the 12-15 but they can serve as a base for great low-carb meals by mixing in other diced veggies, lean meat, boiled egg and some good (fattening) salad dressing. I get hungry just thinking about how good they are! Last, lay off those Atkins bars for a while. Make those coconut oil candies now that Toni pasted in the recipe, they will serve the dual purpose of helping with fat and taming the sweet tooth/chocolate craving. I hope I haven't been too redundant with advice you have already gotten AND I hope all goes well at the doctor's office.

Robin, you can find out how many calories you need if you go to your fatsecret page and calculate it. Mine seemed way to high, I aim for between 1100 and 1200 per day though don't always make that. 1000 is not enough, you need more than that and while the old Atkins didn't do calories, the new does. Check what's right for you in a few different places maybe, google rdi and see.

The candy recipes are on page 18 and 19 of the recipe thread, you can find both but the one has peanut butter, not something you should be having for the first few weeks, at least.

I'm stealing a minute from a very busy day to give a more detailed response.
Rchap - First, let me say, get better! I hope you feel better soon.

Second, I took a peek at your food journal and there are a couple of things that stick out.
One, like lbsgoner said, your protein seems a bit high. There are a number of people whose bodies convert excess protein into glucose. Angie posted a really great thread on how much protein and fat is needed here. It's the third post down.
Also, you really, really need to get your leafy green vegetable carbs up. There is no other way for me to say this, you MUST eat 12 - 15 vegetable carbs a day.

One last thing, you need more water. You should be shooting for at least half of your body weight in water a day.

There's a lot of really great info on the link that I posted above. Take the time to read through it. If possible get and read through New Atkins For A New You.
This way of eating does work and can be extremely healthy but only if you do it correctly.

Hey everyone,

Sia, keep up the good work! Staying focused can be hard, but just try to think of your next goal and how great you're gonna feel if you stay on track. Smile

Julie, thank you!! That description is perfect and I know exactly what to go out and look for now. Smile NZ and the US speak different versions of English sometimes, lol. Razz Enjoy your time with your niece and I hope she sleeps long enough for you to get some work done on that manuscript, good luck!

Sunkeeper, we're moving into Autumn here but it's still really warm. I'll point my fan in your direction and hopefully blow some of the good weather over to you!

Rockytu, good to see you're still with us! Smile

Robin, I hope you feel better soon! Those sinus colds are the worst.

Hi Dialup, good to see you checking in. Hope everything's going well for you on the LC front. Smile

Toni - so jealous of your new fridge! It sounds like it has all the bells and whistles! Mine is just regular - it doesn't even have a water dispenser or ice machine or anything! Might be time for me to upgrade too hehe. Very Happy

Lbsgoner - It's 11:40am (I don't have lunch til 1pm) and all this talk of salad is making me hungry! I'm having a salad with cold roast pork and brie cheese today. COME FASTER PLEASE, LUNCHTIME! Smile

Hey Katred, welcome! Smile

Fluffydiva, posting on here is totally more interesting than homework, lol. Razz

Hey Yolanda, good to see you! Smile

As for me, Linda's mention of buttery, creamy prawns yesterday put thoughts in my head that wouldn't leave so I had prawns fried in butter with garlic, chilli and cream this morning for brekkie (yeah, prawns for breakfast, I'm weird, I know, lol). Feeling quite tired today, went to see a show last night with my girlfriend as part of the Arts Festival that's on here at the moment. The show was called Cantina and is a 1930s style vaudevillian show. It was awesome but I didn't get home til really late, lol, so I'm trying not to doze off at work! Drinking lots of coffee today.

Haven't been too strict with my eating lately, I sorta let myself slack a little bit with being sick. I've still been eating LC but just not watching portions, probly not eating nearly enough veges and way too much cheese (I do love my cheese!). Going to try and log my food tho, I haven't been because I'm lazy and if I have to create too many custom foods I get bored and say I'll do it later - which I obviously don't, lol.

Anyway, hope ya have a good day! Smile

Hello all! I haven't had a chance to read all of the posts but I will definitely try. It's been a really hard week and weekend. My mother is in an imobilizer. The transportation company (supposedly take the elderly and disabled to doctor appointments) pushed my mother into a post and dislocated her shoulder. It really made her decline. I've been really upset by the events. Usually I thrive on tension but this stress is too much.

Today I ate way over my RDI's - way over in carbs - way over in everything. Anything that didn't get out of my way. I really feel sick now.

I had just started to figure out that I need to keep my fat high 80% - almost like doing a fat fast or my weight loss stops. Now I probably gained. Good thing it's not a weigh in day or I'd really lose it.

Hopefully a better day tomorrow - I'll get back on track.

Good health to everyone!

Whoops, I hadn't refreshed the page so I didn't see your post, Rdrunr. So sorry to hear about your mum. It can be really hard to stay on track when stressed so don't beat yourself up about it. Tomorrow's another day. Smile

Hey everyone - hope all is well !!

So on my 12th day of Induction -- I get the Atkins flu symptons (head hurts, ect). I think I'm just kicking into full-on Ketosis (according to my strips)!! I feel like a Mack truck ran over me !! Even so - I've told my self the "feeling bad" is just proof I'm heading in the right direction. I don't do sick very well - cause I'm not use to feeling bad !!

Even so -- I worked out today and I'm pushing through this !! I know that being heavy makes me feel bad "mentally" - so if I have to endure physically feeling bad for just a while, it's a reminder not to put that "junk" in my body again !!
Nothing taste as good as strong and healthy feels !
