I started out the day on fat fast. Did really well until was asked to dinner by daughter and granddaughter. Still didn't do too bad for Atkins. Had spinach & shrimp 1/2 salad and french onion soup, no bread at Applebees. Stayed close to 1000 calories but a little too much protein. Back on the fat fast wagon tomorrow.

Rdrunr - How did you make out on the fat fast?

I have decided to try the fat fast for 4 days. I logged my food in already for all 4 days (beginning yesterday), so there is no reason I shouldn't be able to follow it. I will do a couple 1200 calorie days also but since that runs into the weekend, I won't delude myself into thinking it's definitely going to happen. I'll just play the 1200 calorie portion of the fast by ear and see how the next few days go first.

One day at a time and day one was completed yesterday. Yeah! No hunger and no cravings, so that was wonderful. I did try a bullet proof tea yesterday, as opposed to coffee. I remember some of us wondering how that would taste...well.....let's just say I won't be doing that again. TOM is lurking so I really have no expectations in the amount of weight I will lose during this fat fast. Now if I become crabby, I can blame it on TOM instead of the fast. Laughing

You know, I'm going to be traveling this weekend, and there are times when it turns out to be super inconvenient to find affordable gluten-free meals when you're in an unfamiliar place. Maybe I'll just bring a pound of macadamia nuts and plan on a 3 or 4 day fat fast.

That's not a bad idea eKatherine. It will definitely leave time for other things since there aren't any "meals".

So day 2 is over and it was a bit more challenging then day 1 because I was hungry most of the day. Not sure why, but my stomach was actually growling. So I went over the calorie allotment by 100. I still kept my fat % over 80 so I was happy about that. Here's to hoping tomorrow will be easier. Good night all.

Update: Weighed in this morning. I was happy to see that I dropped a pound. 2 days on the fast and 2 lbs lost. I just need to figure out a way to ease back into my normal eating pattern by Friday so I don't gain it all back.

I bought some ketostix for the first time in my life. Not in ketosis. I decided to start today.

Breakfast: "cream drink"
1 oz heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cocoa
dash of salt

Put in a mug, mix. Add hot water. Put in the microwave for about 30 seconds until it is at drinking temperature. Stir well.

It looks like for lunch I can fit in a couple of ounces of one of my favorite foods of all time, boiled pork skin. For fat lovers only. When I slow roast a pork shoulder in a covered ceramic-glazed cast iron casserole, the skin gets wonderfully, decadently soft and gelatinous.

Mokakiss - try upping your fat to 90%. That will really help as far as the hunger.

Hello all! Been so busy not too much time for myself.

Mokakiss I did well on the fat fast, lost 3 pounds in 3 days but when I went back to regular low carb I gained again. At first I was weighing myself every day. I panicked when I gained 4 pounds, then went down 2 the next day. All in all, I lost 2 pounds.

Atriel2 maybe next time I'll just copy your food plan and see if it works for me. I should try the fat fast for more days next time. I can't seem to get it right.

I'll be on vacation next week, Costa Rica. I hope I can stick to Atkins. I know they have plenty of fresh fruit, my weakness. And it's an all inclusive too. Bad time to diet.

Last night I was not in ketosis, nor was I this morning. I am now, but I feel kind of bloated. We will see.

According to the nutritional information, pecans are even higher in fat than macadamias. I have added them to my list and bought some for the weekend. I love macadamias. I think I will bring a little cup with me on my travels to control my portion size.

Thanks Tony. I played with my food log for today and was able to get it to 90% fat and still be realistic about being able to follow it. I'm going to try that today.

Have a great time in Costa Rica Rdrunr and can't wait to hear all about it when you return!

eKatherine, I love macadamias too but will also check out the pecans. Interesting that you're in ketosis, but bloated. Hopefully the bloating will pass sooner rather then later.

The one thing for me is that I need to have some foods with strong flavor. Something to stimulate my taste buds for my "meal" to be satisfying. The foods that have helped me stay on track because of the flavor so far are: Bacon, smoked cheese and garlic and herb boursin cheese (this really helps me stay on track b/c it has sooo much flavor). I'm definitely going for 90% fat today and see how it goes. This morning I lost another couple of pounds. That's definitely incentive for me to stick to the fast for another day.

You know, I'll be honest. I did the fat fast to break a stall. So, yes, I was hoping to lose weight - and I did - during my PMS / TOM week, no less. Which is nothing short of miraculous for me, as I never, ever lose during that week. I'm far more likely to put on anywhere from 5 - 10 lbs. just in water retention. Yes, I know it's just water weight - but that doesn't help the way that it feels when I step on the scale and see my weight going up rather than down.
I really did it more to kick start ketosis and my metabolism.
I added the veggie carbs back very slowly. All in all, I lost 5 lbs. I count that as a win, because I only put one pound back on after the fast was over and my weight is starting to come back down again today.
It definitely wasn't easy - but it also wasn't hard. I know that doesn't make much sense but anyone that's done it or is doing it will understand that statement. By the end of the 10 days, I REALLY missed vegetables. I was so sick of avocados, brie cheese and bacon that I honestly didn't care if I never saw any of those things again.
That said, I am considering doing a smaller fat fast once a month during PMS and TOM, if only to help combat the wicked sugar cravings and binge eating that I usually encounter during those times.

Have an amazing time in Costa Rica, Rdrunr557! I went last year in March and the one meal I had trouble with was breakfast. They mostly have rice&beans, pancakes, eggs and fruit (often really sweet fruit). Next time I go I plan to do self-catering so I don't have to rely on hotel breakfasts. At lunch there was more choice (the rice and beans are separate dishes LOL) and I just asked them to leave off the r&b.

If you are in Tamarindo there was the most amazing "pizza" made with crispy plaintains for the "crust" topped with fresh cheese, carnitas and avocado that was amazing.

Good morning. Thanks Tony. I would completely agree with you. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't easy either. I don't know how you did it for 10 days!! I would also do it again for a few days. Yesterday was the last day of my fast fast....it really should be called "eat fat" and not "fat fast" b/c I was eating. To me a fast is the absence of food. As Dianna would say Anyhoo Smile.... In 4 days I lost 4 lbs. In actuality though, some of that weight was water weight from my Super Bowl Sunday eating. I'm still happy though since it got me back into ketosis asap and I had no carb cravings which I sometimes do when I eat off plan as badly as I did during the Super Bowl. In order to avoid gaining it all back I'm going to increase my calories, but try to maintain a 70/25/5 macro nutrient ratio for the weekend and then the latter half of next week aim for 70/20/10. I'm going away next weekend so I'm a bit concerned there, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Have a Happy Friday everyone!

hi all, I have been on induction since December 12th, i haven't dared to move to OWL because it has been so hard to get results on induction alone. I was stalled at 235 for almost a week and then went to 237 on the morning I read about the fat fast and decided to try it immediately. The first three days I had two cans of coconut milk a day whipped into mousse, for the last two days I had to travel for business so I had two small handfuls of nuts, macadamia/almond, for breakfast, lunch, and then a ceasar salad for dinner. I hadn't weighed in for the last two days so I was anxious to find out how I did. This morning I weighed in at 232.8. I learned two things from this experiment, the fat fast is a tool I can use to get things moving, I will start to alternate fat fast days with normal induction days more often. The second thing I learned, is that I think my stalls have been cause by my body being able to effectively convert protein into glucose, I think I've been eating too much meat. Going forward I will be eating less meat.

Good Morning All...
I have read thru this thread several times..I really want to be sure I know what I'm doing before I start the Fat Fast. I've read all the articles also. I just want to thank everyone for all the help your postings have given me. I've been yo-yoing for a few months now and I'm hoping this may be the answer.

Well here I am - no Costa Rica - cancelled due to the storm, ughSad
The next available flight was several days later and I could not change my resort reservations. I guess I won't have to worry about the fruit being too sugary. And I won't see monkeys outside my window, just snow!

I'm ready to go back on to the fat fast. And yes it should be called fat feast. I went out today and bought avacados, pork skins and macadamia nuts. Thank for the pecan hint. I'll try them too.

I found a receipe for peanut butter pudding, it's no sugar peanut butter (I use chuncky) and sour cream - it doesn't sound that good but it taste good.

Congrats to those who are moving the scale and luck to those of us still trying. Good night all

The first day on the fat fast I was totally dedicated. The second day my boyfriend got paid, and we went out to supper (salad and steak for me). The third day, today, I was on track up until suppertime, when I started to get mad protein cravings. The fat fast got me into ketosis, and eating 75% fat allows me to eat more protein and stay in ketosis. So I think that will be my aim.

I certainly was eating too much protein at least at times. When my protein intake was high, my weight would go up even if my calories were low. I guess I'll have to figure out how much protein I really need so I can stay in that range.

I don't have a scale while I'm traveling, so I can't say if I've lost weight. (I never believe the mirror. The mirror lies.) Last night I was really tired, having walked many miles yesterday, some of them at top speed in an airport while dragging a suitcase. But even though I'd have thought I wouldn't do well, this morning I had the most amazing workout. I doubled the number of pushups I normally do. That is an incredible improvement. WTF? I must be doing something right.

eKatherine isn't that so strange! The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I had been working my way up to a full hour on the elliptical trainer and had been doing the full 60 minutes for a few weeks. Then one day, out of the blue, I did the 60 minutes on the elliptical, got off of that, walked over to the stationary bike, and did another 60 minutes, and that's exactly what I said, WTF!
