Rachel, I'm thinking of doing Fast 5 for awhile ... my body seems to be telling me it doesn't want food right now so I'd better take advantage of it. Do you still eat low carb during your 5 hour window or are you eating just anything like the plan states?

Thanks!

Hi back2128, I'm doing the Fast 5 aswell. I do still eat low carb during my 5 hour window (usually 5:30pm-10:30pm for me). I usually break my fast with some ham and cream cheese or bacon and eggs, then an hour or so after that (when I get hungry again) I'll eat dinner and then maybe have dessert. I try to make my dinner a bit higher fat cause I'm only eating a third of what I would normally eat in a day and I lose more weight with higher fat levels. Smile

I drink black tea, coffee and lots of water during the day. Let me know if you need any help or anything. Smile

I'm going to do another 2 weeks of fasting. Eat Fast Eat (again dinner to dinner since that's the only meal the family gets to share together). I will begin my fast after dinner tonight (Monday) and break my fast with dinner on Tuesday night. Wednesday will be an eat day and I will begin my fast again after dinner on Wednesday and break it on Thursday with dinner. This time I will limit my Tues and Thur night dinners to 400 calories and see if that helps with the weight loss. Fingers crossed! Anyone else doing another cycle?

Cool! I'm interested in how you guys make out. Jamie, I think you're doing dinner to dinner also, right? I'm excited.

I find it easier to break a fast in the morning, even if it means fasting longer. Last week I tried to fast from dinner one night to dinner the next and found I was so hungry I couldn't stop eating until I had eaten such a heavy meal it kept me up half the night.

I lost weight, because that meal still came in under my target. But it wasn't pleasant getting only a few hours of sleep.

Normally I eat between the hours of 12 noon and 8 pm (two meals only). I'm going to see if I can turn that into a 5 hour window for a while.

A few years back I cut out nighttime eating because of heartburn and lost 30 pounds without dieting before the weight started to creep back on. I wasn't eating breakfast, so that was a 6 hour feeding period.

Thanks for the info eKatherine and the heads up on over eating at the dinner that breaks the fast. There are others in this group that were/are doing the Fast 5 too. I may turn to that in Jan if I find the 24 hr fast too difficult for me to follow.

Last time I did a dinner to dinner fast cycle I took in about 650-700 calories the evening I broke my fast. So this time in order to meet my 400 calorie dinner goal, I think I will have lots of vegetables and some lean protein....maybe a big fat salad.

I will keep updating this post until this week's fast cycle is over.

Day 0 - 133 lb
Day 1 (Fast Day) 132 lb - I began my fast after dinner last night (Monday @ 6:00pm). I lost a pound last night but not sure if it's a "true" loss. I normally eat right up to going to bed, so it might be but either way this is a good start. It's 8:05am and I'm hungry. I was up until 12:30 this morning and got back up again at 5:00am. I didn't sleep well at all, but it's stress related......not because I didn't eat right before bed! Laughing I will drink lots of water and have a cup or two of black coffee or tea. Perhaps a bullet proof coffee in the near future?? I will update again tonight before going to bed.

Update: Ended up going out for dinner, which was NOT a good idea. had a cocktail (it was really good and the first one in many months.) Went over my calorie intake by 300 cal. Will weigh in tomorrow and see what happens but I have to be out the door by 6am so I'll have to weigh in an hour earlier then I normally would. I KNOW I had way too much sodium so a bit concerned. My martini was dirty... Rolling Eyes

I think if I were planning on breaking the fast by eating in a restaurant, I would have to control my eating between courses, and that would help take the edge off my hunger during the meal. But since I fix my own food, I'm not sure the best way to manage breaking the fast so I wouldn't eat too large an evening meal.

It was about 15 years ago I did a series of 2 day fasts on weekends. I started on Friday morning and went through to Sunday morning, when I broke the fast by eating a generous breakfast in a restaurant, then returned to controlled eating. I lost a fair amount of weight, but I also lost a lot of strength. I wasn't tracking my body composition at the time, but I suspect I also lost muscle mass.

Eventually it reached the point where I no longer had the willpower to stay on a fast, period.

But the greatest high I have ever experienced was after eating that first meal (plenty of coffee, which I can no longer drink). It would be interesting to know what that did to my blood sugar.

Katherine... I've been told by a doctor that fasting more than 36 hours can be very dangerous unless under the supervision of a doctor and medically necessary. Maybe you were just fasting for too long? I do fast eat fast. I get a huge surge of energy and alertness while fasting that will last me for about a week.

I dont think I could break my fast at a restaurant, too many choices and a lack of self control would undue the results of the fast. lol.

In retrospect I'm sure I was fasting too long. I just wanted people to be aware of the downside of fasting so they don't get carried away.

As far as eating in a restaurant, since I'm gluten-free, there aren't many choices on the menu for me anyway. I'd probably go appetizer/salad and then order more food if I was still hungry.

I fasted from Monday dinner until this morning, when I woke up and had a piece of carb-free pizza. I am letting that settle. I may have greek yogurt or a piece of fruit if I feel like I need carbs soon, otherwise I will just go back on my normal meal schedule.

Yesterday morning I did half an hour of tapping, and I'm sure that helped a lot.

New weight: 154.2. Down 2.2 pounds, most of it probably water. My weight was up 2 days in a row, but I know the gain was not real because I stuck to the diet like glue every day.

Sarah, so sorry I haven't replied until now. I do Fast 5 every other week due to my schedule. During my 5 hour eating window I still stick to low carb foods.

No worries, Rachel. My life has been a little crazy lately, also. I am trying to work into the fast5... slowly trying to get to the evening window for the break-fast. Hoping it works!

Mokakiss, gotta love those dirty martinis! I can't even imagine the sodium but, on the upside, not too many carbs. Smile
