I've been walking nearly daily (1hr+) for about a month now. It's time to add strength training to my daily routine, but that means logging reps and weight/resistance info. What apps do folks here like for this? Obviously, the faster the better, as keeping up your pace is key to getting the desired results. I haven't even looked into any. If you have the names of a few I'd love to try some out and give feedback.

The only FREE one so far is WorkItOut. It's a bit of a pain to setup, and since I prefer resistance bands to weights, it doesn't quite fit my needs, but I'll use it for a while. There are a few others that look promising, but I'm not in a position to spend any unnecessary money right now. FitSync $2.99 Seems like a decent training community, but use with a handheld requires not only purchase of the software, but monthly or annual subscription as well. I haven't been able to find subscription costs and wont bother signing up for a free account just to find out if the pricing is fair. YourSport (Free, sort of) It's a 5 hour trial for free. I'm not real fond of bait and switch SW, so I haven't tried it. X-Workout Pro $1.49 Not enough info to know what it actually does and the developer's website doesn't even mention the app. Workout Manager $0.99 tracks both cardio and resistance training That's everything I see in the market as of right now. I'm thinking it's time for me to buckle down, go through some android tutorials, and see what I can come up with. They need to add a weight training diary to the calorie counter app. That way we can syn it to our exercise diary. I will try WorkItOut because I am not willing to pay for an app.

Preferably, the calorie counter app would accept exercise (and maybe food) by intent, so our other training apps could talk to it. Problems are opportunities to use our innate capacity for creative thought to mold the universe to our liking.

YourSport helps me do exercises each day. I used free lite version, but wanted to add several exercises for back. I've got pro version and it has exercises editor. Also CardioTrainer is nice, but I don't run everyday.

I've had issues with Cardio Trainer and stability, namely crashing when text messages or phone calls came in. So I used to use BuddyRunner until it started recording sporadic tracks. Now I just use the MyTracks app, which is fine, since I have a large number of non-exercise activities that I record tracks for. I've become frustrated with WorkItOut and returned to a notebook temporarily. The lack of templates mean you have to copy a previous work out, and it wound up dumping my Day 2 work out and putting the day 1 exercises in its place. WorkItOut is not so friendly. I don't like it. CardioTrainer is ok for me, but I'm thinking how to move running to YourSport, because I don't run everyday and I want to see my "total training time".
Do you run for time or for joy?

Right now I'm walking only, and mostly for the exercise. My daily target right now is 8 miles or 2 hours, whichever takes longer. Once I get my weight below 240, I'll replace 2 minutes of walking with 2 minutes of running for every pound under 240. I enjoy the time to think while I walk, but it's certainly not my favorite activity. For me, though, my ultimate goal of fitting into a race car well and having the range of motion and strength necessary to compete are motivation enough to keep at it. i got totally frustrated with workitout as well. Started using FitSync and it's great. They got tons of workouts with videos. got it from the Android market for $2.99 for the year. that's really cheap for what they offer

I use to track everything when lifting. Now, I do not... I just do it. I get up early, 4-5 AM and grab a cup of coffee; I'm lucky to have a bench, free weights, cross pully and a smith machine at home. I separate my muscle groups with chest, shoulders and triceps - squats, extensions, leg curls and calf extensions - back and biceps... I'm stronger than I have ever been now and if that's your goal you don't have to record it. You will remember what weights you have to start out with and when your pushing 45lb dumb bells for over 12 reps you buy 50lb'ers. Tracking food is much more important than tracking exercise because you need to get enough protein and calories to grow muscle.

Thanks for the insight, Dizzzy. I subscribe to the position that in order to know why you're seeing the results you're seeing (or not) you need to know your inputs and adjust them according. Without tracking, you can't adjust. Once you're in a routine or achieve a goal you don't need to be as strict about tracking, but to maximize change you do. Dead on, kristopherd. Although I feel a little pedantic at times writing everything down, it necessary, especially when you start out. I did a quick search for what I thought was a common phrase, and came up with 20 variations instead: "What you measure, you improve" "Cannot Measure it, Cannot Improve it" "Measure to Improve" "If you want to improve it, measure it" ... and so on and so forth.
I'll have to check out FitSync. Unlike all the other PDAs and phones I've had in the past, this phone has really become the central storage of my life.
