After 10 years of trying to figure out why I was feeling so lousy I was finally diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease last week. Hashimoto's is when your body makes antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, a substance in your thyroid. For people with gluten intolerance this is important because the body cannot distinguish between gluten and thyroid peroxidase. So, your boday makes antibodies against the gluten but this antibody also has an affinity for thyroid peroxidase and affects your thyroid function. I did not know that I had a gluten intolerance since I thought that it would present as celiac disease - which I knew I did not have. I read that 98% of people with Hashimoto's have a gluten intolerance. Thinking that I was NOT one of the lucky 2%, I decided to go gluten free to see if this would make a difference. Guess what? A miracle. Feel much better and lost weight! I'm going to keep going and reduce dairy and sugar.
