So, I have been recuperating and unable to exercise, (other than walking). I have gained 12 pounds since my last weigh in...what a disappointment. Doc says I can't be on Atkins anymore because of the high protein. I have yet to find anything, anywhere that states, with only one kidney I have to stay on a low protein diet. He told me no restricitons on what I can eat, so why can't I be on Atkins....AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRG. Anyway, One of the things He would let me do is walk. So the Monday after getting out of the Hospital, I got on our treadmill and started walking. Quarter Mile the first day, Half Mile the second, and in the five weeks since the surgery, I am up to 3.5 miles at a 6% grade, 3.2 MPH...WOOO HOOO. I had been doing 45 Minutes on the cross trainer every morning, but when I tried that the other morning I could only manage 16 minutes before I was tuckered. Now that the weather is getting better I can also get the bike out of the shed, tune her up and get riding again. Since I was doing about 30 miles a day last summer, It'll be interseting to see where my body left off after the surgery.

Bill, I also only have one kidney. My doctor says I can do Atkins but with no red meat, red fish like salmon, or organ meats like chicken livers. It does make it harder, but not impossible. Mostly, I replace it with chickenSmileGood luck with your recovery, and remember it is most important to listen to your body and not try to much to soon, you will only hurt yourself. (experience) I hope that helps.

Thank you for the feed back. Just curious about the "no red meat" thing? I eat a lot of chicken, pork and fish (not alot of Salmon). I have been losing 1 pound a week until a couple of weeks ago, when I plateued. Down to 240, and holding. This makes the third week in a row that I have not dropped a pound. At least I'm getting used to eating less.

Atkins should never be a high protien diet, Atkins is a high fat moderate protien low carb diet. You can always replace protien with a fat product, home made broth anyone? Or perhaps a nice serving of organic strawberries and cream.
