I'm looking for new ideas to keep my dogs busy when Phil and I have to be away from the house during the day.

We have a Standard Poodle, a Toy Poodle, and a Chihuahua.

They have some toys, and chew bones, a really nice open space to run around, and access their own room of the house at will!

The Chihuahua loves digging! She shows me a new hole every week!

They are all such happy dogs, I wonder if there's more I could be doing to keep them content for those times when we're both gone.

Your thoughts are welcome!

If possible a good long walk before you leave is ideal, or a run around a dog park. Tire them out and they will rest while you are gone.

I agree - lots of playing before & after. We are so fortunate to live where we work so my furbaby rarely goes very long alone. For the times she did whenever MH was in the hospital I bought a crate large enough for a Shetland pony (she's a small dog) and filled it with toys but I felt she mostly slept and pouted while she was home alone considering how much she sleeps behind my desk when I am home.

We have a small Border Collie and an American Bullldog. We take them for a long walk before work.and leave lots of challenging toys, like Kong, out for them. We also have a DVD just for animals that plays continuously. They do go to doggy day care several days a week to prevent boredom. It's definitely a challenge to think of new ways to keep them entertained! I wish I could take them to work. Smile

I am looking for a way to entertain our pup too! We want to get him a friend, but we live in a very non-petfriendly area. We are lucky our landlord even let us have him! Need to get up early to take him for a walk. Thinking about getting our friend's dogs to do 'play dates' while we are not home so nobody's dog has to be alone all day.Not sure if that is a good or bad idea.

My dog gets a walk first thing in the a.m. and we also leave puzzle toys for him stuffed with treats - though he is pretty good at them at this point. We leave the radio on for him, too. Twice a week we have a dog walker (can't afford more days). I am allowed to take him to work, but he is vocal and it has not gone well. If he was better, I would take him with me once or twice a week.

I put on a Book on Tape for my younger dog. Keeps him calm when I leave him in the house. Outside, he goes crazy no matter what toys or treats.
