Greetings over 50's - Every bright Monday morning - or sometimes on Sundays and even occasionally on Wednesdays I think to myself - this is my chance to start over - eat right - exercise - do yoga - meditate yayayaya. So my new plan is to try to be accountable to a group. Is there anyone else out there like me who might find it supportive to keep up online with our daily- weekly progress? Would love to hear from you - Smile

As I packed my overflowing bag of food to eat today at work it occurred to me how much work is involved in eating right. If I don't bring lunch or snacks to the office I am confronted with delis or fast food - none of which have the proper mix of nutritious and low calorie meals I need to consume. Fortunately as this is a New Regime I had a lot available at home. I had string cheese in the fridge and had hard boiled some eggs on Sunday. English muffins were on sale this week so I picked up the double fiber kind. So my thought for today is not new - we have all read it before - Be Prepared - (the Boy Scouts had it right!) It's much easier to stay on track if you have the tools you need. Now if someone could come up with a suggestion on how to lug all this stuff into the office without carrying it all in my thermal bag and looking like a bag lady with my lunch bag...my pocketbook...my bag of to do items.... Wait! idea! Maybe I can leave some items in the office fridge. With a small office I have the luxury of doing this. Will try this out! Any other thoughts???

So this morning I woke up freakishly early at 4:30 am and couldn't go back to sleep. My mind was racing with all preparation for an upcoming cruise - all good but I knew my night's sleep was over. Then I remembered there is a 5:45am spin class at my gym. The difference between getting to the gym at quarter to 6 in the morning and 6am seems to stump me. I never make this class and truth be told haven't been to a spin class in months! (I had minor foot surgery in February.) Well cardio is another component of my New Regime and I was happy to take the opportunity to check it off my list early in the day. Over the weekend I like to focus on fun activities to get my exercise in. Tomorrow I am counting nine holes of par 3 golf. I mean I do walk it...so it should count...Right???

Well I got my golf game in and managed to eat reasonably well at a graduation party yesterday. I would check off my first week of the New Regime as a success. To me it's not about dieting everyday. It's a life style I can live with that allows me to enjoy while staying healthy. Everything in moderation! I also added a little bit of strength training by doing an ab work out. WOW! was it hard..I was shocked. I'm not new to exercise but as I mentioned I have been off my schedule since February for a variety of reasons. The good news is abs can show improvement quickly so there's still hope for my new bathing suit and the cruise!

Welcome to July! It's amazing (scary) how fast the year flies by. Us "over 50's" know this gets faster every year. Part of the New Regime is mindfulness. To me getting the most out of our day is physical - mental and spiritual health. Waiting to be happy until we lose those last 10 pounds or until the weekend comes dismisses so much time. We need to enjoy the moment. I am happy this Tuesday morning with where I am and plan on making the most of my day. I hope you do the same! Smile

Besides cardio and strength training flexibility is very important to me. As we get older getting out of bed almost becomes an exercise! I hate feeling achy/painy in the morning. Staying limber and working on balance is an important component in my New Regime. Yoga class is a great way to work on this area. Has anyone done Hot Yoga? I really enjoyed that in the past but haven't had time for it in my schedule lately. Weather permitting I am going to try Yoga at the beach tonight. I am feeling better than I did when I started this so that's my motivation to continue. Have a great 4th!

Tomorrow my family and I leave for our long awaited cruise to Bermuda! Thirty members of the extended family are going and it's going to be a blast. With work and home responsibilities usually consuming a lot of my time I look forward to vacations as an opportunity for gym time! My family thinks I'm a little crazy (ok maybe a lot crazy) but its satisfying for me to start my day with a visit to the gym - which is required to be at 6am before work but during vacations the more civilized 7/8 am. And I will eat and drink what I want - hopefully in moderation but I won't deny myself deserts or strawberry daiquiris! If any of you have vacation plans I wish you a happy - safe and healthy time!

I gained 5 pounds on my cruise and while that doesn't seem like too much it's 4% of my body weight and its taken me months to drop to 125! Before too much panic sets in I'm going to give myself the week to eat healthy and check my weight on Friday.

As today is August 1st I am setting goals for the month and one of them is to do strength training 8 times in the month. (Preferably Tuesday and Thursday, with cardio Mon - Wed - Fri) I realize this is not very aggressive but I can't seem to stay on track with the busy summer schedule. To add a little incentive if I do this for three months I am going to pay myself $300. (The cost of hiring a personal trainer to keep me honest!)

I've got the cardio covered but the strength training is not up to my goal. Will definitely add another strength training tomorrow!
