Hi everyone, I'm new to fatsecret and so glad I found it. Maybe you all can help keep me on track. I'm 58 years old, have dieted all my life--typically anywhere between 5 to 15 lbs over what I want. It was never really difficult to drop it until the last few years. I think I've tried just about every diet out there, have gone the starvation calorie intake to where I am right now--around 1400 cal a day and nothing seems to work. I go to the gym typically 5 days a week for at least an hour each time--geez I feel like I'm broken, help--any suggestions??

Hi and welcome. I've only been a member since December but have found this to be a motivating site. I try to use the diet calendar every day. I can log in what I eat and it tells me what the calorie count is. I can also log in my exercise and activity for the day and it will estimate how many calories I burn. I know that it isn't exact, but it is close and it really has opened my eyes to how many calories are in things and how much exercise I need to do to burn more than I eat. it has been very helpful. I don't have a lot of weight to loose but, like you, I have found it harder as I get older (I'm 50). There are also a lot of great recipes and even challenges that you can join. The people on the site are also very helpful with tips and motivation.
Good luck

Hi and thanks. You are absolutely right about this being an eye opener. I've only been tracking everything for a few days now and had now idea how much fat I was consuming until I did this--uhg, I know what I need to knock out! I am motivated to take it off but that's only half the battle, keeping it off is the real challenge.

I have lowered the amount of carbs I eat and I think that has helped. I used to eat raison bran a couple of times a week but switched to oatmeal (low sugar kind) because of the cold winter and have found that when I started to eat the oatmeal, I started to loose weight. I don't know if it was the oatmeal that helped but I have lost 10 lbs since Dec and kept it off. I'm stuck at this weight and would like to loose more so I'm hoping the warmer weather and getting back outside will help.

I didn't watch things closely this weekend because I had my granddaughter but I do know I didn't fall off badly--maybe a few hundred calories over the weekend. I know what you're saying about the carbs. When I started tracking things again, I could see where I was taking in alot more carbs than I should so I'm starting to really monitor those without going totally Atkins. I don't have a huge amount of weight to take off but these last 15 are stubborn!

I have a real problem following diets, especially ones that tell you that you can't eat certain things. I do much better at counting calories and reducing foods I know I shouldn't eat. Now that I have a better idea of the amount of calories in the foods I've been eating, I think I'm able to do better at choosing the right foods. I would like to loose about 10 more pounds. That might not be realistic because I haven't weighed that since I was 30 but I would actually be happy with just 5 more I think. The last pounds do seem to be the most stubborn! Good Luck this week sticking to your plan.
