Hi there. I'm a 59 year old man and decided that it's time I seriously attempted to lose some weight and shrink the love handles. Being a non-meat eater, I tend to eat too much cheese but this won't help in my quest to lose 10% of my weight in the next 3 or 4 months. Currently tipping the scales at 197lbs I have been to the gym a couple of times last week and today I went swimming for the first time in ages. Did 45 minutes of breast stroke and some front crawl. Hopefully keeping a food diary and exercising will help me to reach my goal. Anyone out there got some tips or suggestions to keep the diet going without resorting to Weight Watchers meals?

Congrats on getting back on a weight loss program. Get fit program. Try not to overdo it, pace yourself. No one needs an injury. At 52 I developed bursitis from my workouts after a decade of a sedentary lifestyle and it took many ice packs and therapy to get it under control.

As to your last question, do you mean TV dinners? Some friends advised me to "just eat half portions" of regular meals but how much we eat depends on what we know about nutrition, right? And calories and such. If we know a lot then maybe cutting down will work for you and you won't need boxed meals. Everyone is such an individual; we have our own ways of "staying on" our program, e.g., I don't like cooking and Lean Cuisines were great for a busy schedule and portion control. I still buy them especially now when I am working on getting off some regained weight. But I have also found out I can prepare some simple things like lean meats in a pita or chicken salads. There are all kinds of tips on the web for cooking up healthy foods. Print some out! Smile

Keeping a food diary, btw, is a smart idea. I still keep track of weight, calories and measurements in a little book. It's my reality check book. Good luck!

That is why this is such a great site. It keeps you aware of exactly how much you have eaten. Just be scrupulously honest in your tracking of exercise & eating. Choose to eat from 1800 cal to 2000 cal but then make sure you exercise at least 500 calories over that every day. And you WILL lose weight.
I am using the Strong Women Stay Slim book by Dr Miriam E Nelson that has all the info for eating healthy & yet watching your calories. It was written 14 years ago yet it is almost exactly the same concept as the current point system of Weight Watchers.

thanks, doperttola! Your advice makes sense...I'll look for the book on Amazon.I love the food diary on here because it helps me break through the denial about how much I eat every day! And it slows me down since I know I have to log on and put every bite in my diary!
