Engine2 Diet - Go Plant-Strong!

 Summary:

How the Engine 2 Diet Came to Life - - -

As a world-class triathlete turned firefighter, Rip Esselstyn was used to responding to emergencies. When he learned that one of his fellow Engine 2 firefighters in Austin, Texas was in dire physical condition with a dangerously high cholesterol level of 344, he sprang into action and motivated the entire Engine 2 firehouse to join together in plant-strong solidarity to help save the life of their friend.

During his 10+ years as a professional triathlete, Rip had adopted a plant-based diet at the advice of his father, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, chief of surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, who discovered through medical research that a plant-based diet, low fat diet could reverse heart disease and diabetes.

By committing to plant-based meals with Rip as their guide, all the Engine 2 firefighters in Austin lost weight (some more than 20 lbs.), lowered their cholesterol (Mr. 344's dropped to 196), and improved their overall health. Rip outlines his proven plan in his book, The Engine 2 Diet -- now a New York Times bestseller. His plant-powered eating program is based on a diet of whole foods, including vegetables, whole grains, fruit, legumes, seeds and nuts and is designed to transform your body and your lifestyle in just 28 days.

Since Rip joined Whole Foods Market as a Healthy Eating Partner in the Fall of 2009, interest in Engine 2 and the plant-strong lifestyle has increased exponentially as Healthy Eating Specialists at stores nationwide guide customers in discovering the plant-strong lifestyle through Engine 2 28-Day Challenges.

Fab50less50's top tips

1.Review the "Why do This" Video on the Engine2.com website
2.Prep Week - Before you start your 28-Day Challenge, take the time you need to clean out the junk food in your kitchen, review Engine 2 recipes (and use our handy grocery list builder!) and refill your cupboards and refrigerator with healthy, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans.
3.Week 1 - Week one is about dropping ALL dairy and processed food. That includes milk, cream, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream, sour cream. Cheese is the greatest source of artery-clogging saturated fat in the American diet. And the animal protein found in milk products, called casein, has been proven to be tumor and cancer promoting. For a thorough explanation of the dangers of animal protein and dairy products, please check out our Science section at engine2.com
4.Week 2 - drop anything that paws a hoof, flaps a wing or flips a tail. Nothing with a face or a mother, living on land or in water. Without animal protein, cholesterol, and fat in the diet your arteries will sing, your liver and kidneys will gain strength, and your energy will blossom. You’ve also charged forward without dairy products. Without dairy products you’ll be absorbing calcium instead of losing calcium.
5.Week 3 - Last to go – extracted oils. Despite popular belief that oils are good for you, especially Olive Oil, the truth is all oils provide the most concentrated source of calories on the plant.
6.Week 4 - You decided it was time to take your health into your own hands. You are becoming bulletproof to the chronic western diseases infesting every city in America. This is your last week of your personal 28-Day Challenge and those of you that follow and finish plant-strong – you have successfully planted the seeds that can last a life time.
