 Summary:

Nutrition is the fuel – in the form of food and drink – that we put in our bodies to make them function. Simply put – it’s what our bodies need in order to support life. Many people fill their bodies with toxic chemicals and expect them to function optimally.

This doesn’t work.

Just as a car needs the right fuel and oil in order to run properly and prolong its lifespan, so we need to ensure that what we’re putting in our bodies is nourishing it and not destroying it.

Many of society’s diseases and illnesses are related to our dietary choices. Statistics show that 61% – nearly two in every three – South African citizens are overweight, obese or morbidly obese. Most of Western society’s so-called ‘silent killers’ – hypertension, hyperlidaemia, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease can be linked to the consumption of carbohydrates, specifically among those individuals that can be classified as ‘carbohydrate resistant’ or that suffer from Metabolic Syndrome.

HELP is the first 28-day inpatient program or 6-week Outpatient program in South Africa that looks at treating carbohydrates and sugar as an addiction comparable to narcotics such as heroin and cocaine. By taking a few simple steps toward improving your diet, and by dealing with the psychological and spiritual issues associated with carbohydrate and sugar addiction, you can significantly improve the quality of your life.

About / History

HELP – or the Harmony Eating & Lifestyle Program – is a partnership comprised of Professor Tim Noakes, nutritionist Rael Koping, and Steven and Karen Thomson of Harmony Addictions Clinic. We are proud to launch the very first 28-day inpatient or 6-week Outpatient eating and lifestyle program aimed at treating carbohydrate and sugar addiction.

This is not a new approach – in fact, studies have been carried out over the past few decades. The studies have shown that for some individuals, the consumption of carbohydrates has the same physiological response in the dopamine receptors in the brain as heroin or cocaine addiction does.

HELP offers the first treatment that implements these scientific findings. HELP patients will find comfort in the fact that they can utilise a 28-day inpatient period or 6 week outpatient period to improve their lifestyle in a safe, supportive environment. Healthy lifestyle changes as a result of HELP include dietary habits, exercise, and trauma work, as well as psychological and spiritual counselling, and these changes will all be incorporated in order to facilitate a holistic change.

HELP is run in conjunction with Harmony Addictions Clinic in Hout Bay, Cape Town. After assisting thousands of people in attaining sobriety, Harmony Clinic recently expanded its horizons to empower all individuals to lead a healthy and nutritious lifestyle by means of changes to their dietary habits as well as working on emotional, spiritual, psychological and trauma issues that may be connected to weight gain or body issues.

HELP is not a diet. Instead, it is a holistic lifestyle program for treating individuals by equipping them with the knowledge, skills and experience to unlock their full potential and getting them to understand that their constant ongoing battles with food are likely an addiction.

As with chemical addictions, it’s not necessarily the substance that is the problem, but rather a combination of underlying psychological and biological factors that form the root cause. By treating carbohydrate and sugar abuse in the same manner, better results are achieved.
