The Carb Nite Solution - Low Carb

 Summary:

This diet was created by John Kiefer. Essentially, you go 9 and ½ days ULTRA low carb (30 grams or less). On the evening of the 10th day you carb load! Pasta, Pizza, Ice Cream, Doughnuts, or whatever your little carb-hungry self has been craving. The next morning you go back to Ultra Low Carb, but each week (you pick the day) you get another Carb Nite!
This is not a “cheat night.” You are not allowing yourself to just cheat because you are craving carbs… The SECRET to the diet is in the carb nite. You are using this night to spike your insulin for 6 to 8 hours. This keeps your hormone levels in “fat burning zone.” It also ensures your body is not moving from using fat for energy to muscle. Your body will start stripping itself of fat, keep your muscle, and if you are lifting – guess what? Protein helps build muscle – and what are you eating? PROTEIN!!! So you can build muscle (not required – but nice!), keep the muscle mass you have and keep stripping the fat off your body! And NOTHING is off the menu – just if it’s high carb – you just have to save it till your carb nite :)

How To Follow The Carb Nite Solution - Low Carb:

The above pretty much says the "meat" of it (he he.. meat... Low carb - get it?). John is a big fan of lifting and lifting HEAVY - use Whey Isolate shakes afterwords - they are low carb and will help you build.

You need to keep 5 days inbetween carb nites. So if you have a carb nite on Monday, you can't have another until Saturday.

Carb nite is not a "carb day" it should generally be done from 4 - Midnight - (I start earlier, because I need time to let my food settle!) - but it should be at LEAST 6, if not 8 hours of carb loading.

In my personal experience, the one thing I have found I can't really have, carb nite or not - is sugar filled drinks. Even fruit juice. Water, coffee, tea, or diet sodas for me is a limitation every day (but I don't much care about that).

Mirror's lie - even the scale can lie - check your "inches." Check your clothes. I keep a weight chart - but weight is still a roller coster - and you WILL almost always gain on your "carb nite." In general, I go up 7 lbs on carb nite - but at the end of every week I am down at least 1 net lb from my last carb nite.

Remember, this is not a "carb meal," it's an entire evening of carbs!! So go big, or go home!

djtracid's top tips

1.Meat, cheese, eggs, and some veggies are your staples.
2.If you have a "sweet tooth" there are tons of things you can still have to help curb it until carb nite. Calorie Countdown Chocolate Milk is my favorite! Also, berries in heavy cream - YUM!
3.Don't give up - and don't cheat! You only have to wait till the end of the week for God's sake!
4.Skip breakfast - try not to eat until noon. If you need breakfast, try and keep it the lowest carbs of the day (bacon!).
5.DO drink caffeine... Coffee, Diet Coke, whatever...
6.Don't rely on the scale alone...

About / History

I did not develop it, but the “nutshell” version from Kiefer is, he was an overweight physicist. He had even been teased about his weight before. He went low carb and was losing weight, but then stalled out. After several frustrating weeks of no weight loss he broke down and ate like 20 doughnuts. The next day he started losing again. He thought while he wasn’t a nutritionist (though he had started down that path at one time), as a physicist, he knew 2 things well. Chemical reactions, and research. John spent years pouring over 20,000 weight loss studies to pull the details of what really works and what only “seems” like it works. Between that and his knowledge of chemistry, over the years he came up with this diet.
I don’t know John, but the generally history is kind of what I ‘understand’ from his book and what I have read online as to how this diet was created.
