Use the Fat Secret web site to record ALL daily activities and ALL calories eaten. Weigh yourself daily and look for 7-day trends in weight loss or weight gain.

To lose weight, simply eat fewer calories than your body uses each day.

The concept is simple, but tracking everything can be difficult. Use the Android or iPhone Fat Secret apps to keep up.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Do not starve yourself! I advocate eating fewer calories than your body burns. This doesn't mean starving all day so you can eat a slice of cheesecake at night. Please balance your diet.

andydumm's top tips

1.Weight loss is simply about calories in versus calories out. Record every physical activity and everything you eat. Make sure there is a calorie deficit at the end of the day.
2.Weigh yourself at the same time every day. Be aware that your body can fluctuate its weight by up to 2lbs throughout the course of the day. Look at 7-day trends so see changes.
3.Not all calories are created equal. Try to get the most protein and fiber for your calories eaten. You will be better nourished and you will be less likely to feel hungry.
4.Daily vitamins fill in the cracks. When losing weight you need to reduce your calorie intake. Don't let that turn into malnourishment. If you don't want to find out first-hand what scurvy is then I suggest you make sure you get all of your essential vitamins and minerals each day.
5.Watch your sodium intake. If you have too much sodium in your diet you will retain water and weigh more.
6.Take a day off. Don't get burnt out. Have one day a week where going over your calorie budget is okay. I once ate about 4,500 calories in one day simply because I had dinner at my grandma's house! (The pineapple upside down cake and vanilla ice cream were decadent!)
