40 something Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian

 Summary:

Lacto-Ovo Vegetarianism is a lifestyle for me and not a diet. Nothing is off limits to me except for meat and meat byproducts (gelatin and rennet). I do eat dairy because it is an easy form of complete protein and calcium, but I eat it in moderation as it contains saturated fats. My intention is to live my healthiest life. I am mindful of what I put into my mouth. I am hypothyroid and over 40, so it is important for me to know exactly the number of calories I consume in order to lose the weight that I've gained from incorrect medication dosage and maintain a healthy weight.

durans's top tips

1.A vegetarian diet may help you lose weight — if you make good food choices.
2.Eat 4-5 small meals throughout the day. Plan 3 main meals and 2 snacks from foods that you already eat. Last meal should not be eaten less than 3 hours before bed.
3.Plan your meals ahead of time. Use meals that you commonly eat and enjoy. Structure them to include, carb, protein, fat, veg. Portion them to not exceed 500 calories for main meal and 150-200 calories for snacks. (300/400/500 + snacks is a good guideline)
4.Reduce Salty Carbs and Added Sugars: minimize snack foods (bread, chips, crackers, salty snacks) and sugared drinks.
5.Drink water: at least 72oz. I drink 12 oz at each sitting and carry a 32 oz metal water container with me during the day.
6.Exercise. Be consistent. Walking 30 minutes 5 days a week is easy and low impact - no need to be extreme.

About / History

I became a strict Vegetarian 7 years ago with the purpose of living a healthier peaceful life. Choosing to refrain from eating food that had to die to get onto my plate helps me be mindful of all living beings. I've enjoyed learning to cook and my plate has developed into colorful meals.
