About / History

The original Macrobiotic diet and philosophy was created by a Japanese man - George Ohsawa. He recommended a simple and harmonious lifestyle and reportedly cured his serious illness by subsisting on brown rice and water.

Michio Kushi was a follower of Ohsawa's teachings and made further forays into the western world with Macrobiotics. There are various books written about the Macrobiotic way of living, including disease prevention and cookbooks.

A definition of Macrobiotic Living from The Macrobiotic Way by Kushi (2003):

"A balanced approach to living through a balanced diet, moderate exercise, harmony with the environment, and understanding the yin and yang philosophical principles."
