My number one rule is simple: if you want it, eat it, but don't go crazy on the portions and do build everything into your calorie allotment. You can have a brownie or ice cream or pizza or a burger; just make sure to keep track of the calories and portions accordingly. I've found that I enjoy Kroger's Mini Fun Daze cone (130 kcals) just as much as I would enjoy a full-size Drumsticks cone (320 kcals). Likewise, if I'm experiencing a craving for salty fries, a small bag at McDonald's or Burger King will do the trick (and at Burger King I can get the reasonably-proportioned Whopper Jr. if I'm craving a fast-food burger fix). The one other key to this concept is to stop classifying food as "good" and "bad;" "nice" and "naughty." There's no need to feel guilty about a not-so-healthful dessert or snack (or meal, for that matter) from time to time. If you know you're going to want it, make room.
