Helped elderly friend yesterday and washed bedding. Need to bathe my dog today, although he doesn't smell bad, at least not to me. I am probably one of those dog lovers who smells like a dog all the time and doesn't realize it. But I love the scent of his soft fuzzy fur. Bought some composure treats today in preparation for the 4th. This will be the first time we've used them, so I hope they help. Firecrackers and thunder make him shake like a leaf, poor little guy.

Didn't do too badly yesterday evening, except for stopping by mom's and eating a piece of banana nut bread and a mini-Reese's. I don't resist when she hands me a plate, and she knows I won't. I've seen this same dysfunctional dynamic on shows like My 600-lb Life. There's an enabler and a weak person, and so many failed attempts at changing. It's so bizarre. My brother has to take diabetic meds now because of his weight, and she still gives him dessert. I don't think mom is trying to hurt us, but sometimes it feels that way.

It sounds as if you know what is going on with your mom's enabling, so it's up to you to change things. You can do it. My dogs need a bath, too. I gave them both Bach Rescue Remedy last night before the fireworks began. Thank goodness, it only lasted 30 minutes. They were still trembling, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

You're right, Mom2. I can clearly see what my mom is doing, and somehow I feel like I have the emotional maturity of a 5-year-old when I'm around her. Time to grow up!

Perhaps re-directing the conversation with your mom - like I have to do with mine. Example... meet on neutral ground and have healthier choices for the two of you and communicate to her that this is your "new normal". Mothers will always "mother" us, and the best we can do (at times) is to channel that energy into something that enables us to do/live better. My hope for you is that it becomes more manageable.
