Johanne's Journal, 29 December 2011

As some of you know, March, 2010, I stopped eating all flour products because that's where LOTS of calories are . . . no bread, no cookies, no bagels, no noodles, no breaded, fried foods, no muffins, etc. By doing so, I started to lose weight, feel 100% better and get my life back. I also, accidentally, went gluten free. It turned out, I was a celiac and had been my whole life. The big thing, though, was I didn't replace gluten products with non-gluten products. After all, the reason I had quit eating those things was the density of calories. (And the jacked up prices on gluten free products didn't help either. LOL!)

The holiday season hit and everyone who loves me pulled out all the stops to make sure I had gluten free foods . . . cornbread (made with a whole stick of butter and 1/2 cup of sugar), crustless cheese cake, pumpkin pudding, cookies, muffins, stuffing . . . in short, all the things I haven't been eating for almost 2 years. On top of all that, I also got taken out to eat 4 times. I'm a spoiled grammy!

In one short week, I gained 6.8 lbs. This is the first actual gain I've had since I started eating correctly on March 1, 2010. Wow! What a shock. (Well, the pound of bacon I downed in 4 days didn't help either. It went on sale for $2.50 a lb and I haven't bought bacon in years, so I got a lb for a Christmas treat. :-)

So, here I am, humbled but still kicking. Thankfully, I have no plans for New Years, so I won't be subjected to irresistible treats. It will be black eyed peas and some sauerkraut for me. LOL!
214.8 lb Lost so far: 64.2 lb.    Still to go: 14.8 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Well... join the "tubby" party... I put on 6 lbs eating all those things I had stopped eating, too... you notice how the words Gluten and Glutton are similar? LOL! I was a Glutton for several days. Hubby and I ate all the things we have denied ourselves for a month. He finally had given up his bread and pasta. He has been eating on his one loaf of French bread for a whole week. I am rather proud of him... he was eating three loaves a week! Anyway, I am trying to get back to NO Grains again. We are both humbled, but we have a new year to look forward to!!! Yehaw!!!

LOL! I hadn't put those two words together before. How appropriate! Yes, my name is Johanne and I was a glutton. (Notice the word WAS?) All of my current challenges go dead in a day or two and my new challenges all start in a day or two, so I guess this is a great time to make a fresh start. 2012 is a fresh new year for a fresh new outlook. Yehaw back atcha!!! We can do this.

Bren, I think this coming year is going to be fantastic for all of us. Look at all the wonderful, loving people we have here to back us up. I just hope it doesn't take months to lose the weight I gained in just one week! :-) Love you too, you know? By the way, have you heard from Steph?

Isn't that amazing that you found out about being celiac after the fact? I know exactly what you mean about the non-gluten products. I'm glad that you had such a terrific holiday with your family.

I'm so with you on making 2012 a great year. New year, new start. I only gained 1.6 lbs this holiday season but I put on 10 lbs total from August. Head hanging in shame. I restart my committment to lose on Monday. Going out of town tomorrow and decided that Monday is the best time for me. Happy New Year!!!!

I love your lamb-hat pic too, Jo! So cute! I'm joining you all in confessing that I did terribly through the holidays. My weight has gone up 10 pounds since September. It started with anniversary candy, then Halloween candy, then Thanksgiving pie, then Christmas everything. Oink. I'm ready to get back on track!

Helewis, finding out I was a celiac was a total eye-opener. It explained all the symptoms I've had since I was a baby . . . the deadly anemia, my teeth growing in missing enamel, my weird periods and pregnancies, the small, rash patches on my skin in the exact same areas that they could never diagnose, IBS (which I never had) . . . and many others. People thought I was a hypochondriac, but, as my Dr.s kept saying, "You aren't a hypochondriac if there is really something wrong." I have had MANY transfusions, hospitalizations, bone marrow biopsies, and on and on and on. When I figured out what was really going on, I was 66 and it made me so angry. My whole life could have been different if only my "specialists" had consulted with each other and put 2 and 2 together. Thankfully, the cure is so simple . . . just don't eat gluten. LOL! I've had a lovely holiday and I hope yours was the same. Happy New Year! 2012 is going to be OUR year!!!

David's Mom, boy I hear you (by the way, I'm a David's mom too. LOL!) I haven't lost any since July and gained this last week. It's time to get back on that horse. Monday is a great day to start . . . a brand new year, a brand new start! Happy New Year to you too!!!

Bake, I hate how easily we regain it and what a fight it is to just keep it off, let alone lose it. I know the new year will be good for us. We've got fresh commitment and each other . . . what a winning combination! Happy New Year!

Coco, thanks! That picture was taken at my full top weight. It's a good one to put up as a reminder not to go back there. LOL! But I was having a lot of fun that day, and it shows. I'm oinking right along with you. We need to remember what's at stake. We're not doing this to look good or to fit into a smaller sizes. We're doing this to save our lives. We're all going to be healthier, more lively people by this time next year and we're all going to be around to congratulate each other on our happier selves. Happy New Year dear Coco!!!
