"It's what you learn after you think you know it all that counts." ~ John Wooden

It's over, but I can't say it was a waste of time. Trying to stay under 1400 calories when maintenance is 2800 while protein requirements are 180 gr and carbs must be limited to 70 gr or under, was simply too much for me. Fat allotment outside of that was 40 gr. I can't live that way.

Did I learn anything? I'm no longer afraid of starchy carbs and will use them. I haven't been avoiding them entirely, but I've wrapped my head around them differently. The concept of depletion and loading brings back the idea of carb backloading in a more enlightened way. Restricting carbs somewhat in the early part of the day and eating some carbs before a workout, will allow me the energy I need to lift and then I can eat some more carbs to replenish. It's not as extreme as depleting over 4 days and then carb loading, but it will work for me.

Exercise will of course use glycogen stored in muscle so the carbs eaten are first prioritized to muscle tissue for replenishment. I can have quite a feast with backloading using starchy and sugary carbs to spike insulin for storage in muscle tissue. When the insulin level falls, it should push blood sugar low triggering glucogon signaling the liver to release glycogen to bring the blood sugar up. This will ensure the liver loses some glycogen each day.

I can further play with this idea by backloading on days when I work out, and sticking with lower glycemic carbs on days when I'm not lifting.

In this little experiment with UD2 I discovered that I lost enthusiasm for everything - diet, lifting, and just enjoying my day. Everything became a slave to the diet, and I'm unwilling to live my life that way.

That being said, I will return to the idea of flexible dieting regardless of the slow progress. With 2800 as maintenance, I will some weeks choose a full maintenance week. On others, I will set 2800 as a threshold, keep protein at 180 or there abouts, carbs around 240 (returning to a zone ratio on those macros) and filling up to 2800, or attempting to cut fats slightly to give a deficit. The plan will be between 2800 and 2300 each day as I feel necessary, with fat being the major variable since fat does not influence insulin or glucagon secretion. Carbs will be the second variable, and protein will remain at 170 or higher per day.

UD2 is simply too much for me, though I learned a lot about my ability to go that low in calories, and I learned a lot about how to more intelligently to use various carbohydrates.

I may try UD2 again in the future, but it would more likely be for a week at a time just to shake things up.

I appreciate all the support you guys gave me, but if I want to be this brutalized in the future, I'm more likely to join a fight club.

That's one of the reasons I experiment Bruce, to learn my limitations, it's always good to go outside of your comfort zone every once in a while, it's amazing the things you learn about yourself. Well done!

Bruce, I support the above Public Service Announcement. When I looked at the diet and read a few journals of folks that were doing it, I knew I couldn't/didn't want to even start it. Way to hardcore and intrusive for me. Thanks though for trying it out for us all and giving your feedback....appreciate your effort!!

Bruce, I said this almost 28 pounds ago back in January: Try, fail and adjust. Good for you.

I agree with everyone - tweaking and experimenting is essential for success.

2800, WOW. to be a man lol... Nice thing with your experiment was you got to feel how it affected your workout and now you don't have to be a slave to the plan but incorporate the concept. Well done, bravo!

Ugh I got that way too when I reached deep into the math and science of it all. I got bored and just blah like a robot. No thanks but I will keep trying different approaches and fiddling w numbers though as long as it's beneficial:-) way to hang in there through to the end of that!!

I tried to keep up with your journey as you went but it got a bit heady for me, and I wasn't even doing it. Nice work, though, it reminded me of when Neo finally became The One, you worked that sh!t!

lol Made me laugh, Phil. Thanks everyone. I found the quote at the bigging of journal today 1 hour after bailing on the diet. I think Misty is right. You have to keep kicking at it until you find the one that works. Of course, as the saying goes... everything works - for about 6 weeks. #changeitup

Ollie. I would be interested in studying food combining (there's a word for it out there somewhere) that talks about food pairing of carb sources for complete amino acids. I disagree with a lot of what you said, and as far as 'meat and dairy bullies' I don't think anyone is as big a bully as true believers who are vegan. Anyway. I believe in protein from animal sources, but then I live somewhere where I can see grass and be in the deep woods in about 5 minutes. My meet sources never hit a feed lot or processing plan, which means they don't spend the end of there lives living in some other animals $h!t. I have a question though. You ever do that with an orange juice concentrate? And what the heck is a Lorna Doon?

"What the heck is a Lorna Doone?” ????? !!!!! Come to the delicious dark side, buddy. Lorna Doone is the purified cousin of the Pecan Sandie.

Okay. What's a Pecan Sandie, then Rev? I'm serious. Am I living in the wrong country?

We don't have poutine or good beer, you're not missing out.

oh, my. Lorna Doones and Pecan Sandies are part of my former life. They are cookies. Shortbread cookies. Lorna Doones are small squares and Pecan Sandies ( a Keebler creation) are big and round. Both filled with fat and bad fats and sugar and wheat and probably corn syrup. When I want to have a crazy treat, I have a “sand tart sundae” which is pecan sandies, vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. It is a very rare treat that (annual?) that always leaves me with a stomach ache.

Oh Bruce, my friend, never had a Lorna Doone made by Nabisco????
