Fledgist's Journal, 08 October 2011

Down just a little at the end of the week. BMI at 26.3, which the Halls.MD website states is at the 42nd percentile for adult men in my age group. So, still noticeably overweight, but also below average. This is the one of the few areas where I am happy to be moving away from the median in a downwards direction. If I lose another 9 lbs, and finally hit the very top of the normal range, I'll be at the 29th percentile. That's something to reflect on -- 71 percent of adult men in the US in my age group are overweight or obese. That's not good.

Meanwhile, I have another high stress week out of the way and one more to come. I've ended my year of physical training. It's been valuable. The discipline has certainly helped keep my weight loss on track. Now I've got to keep going to the gym on a regular basis (I've been doing that 2-3 times a week, not just on the one day a week I've been seeing my trainer). I've learned a lot. Now for the next stage.
183.6 lb Lost so far: 153.4 lb.    Still to go: 15.6 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Great news that you are below average on your BMI.... Scary figures for over weight / obese men - and no doubt just as bad for women. Our society has certainly got a lot to learn..... They should all be FS member lol.

I've just checked out your figures, and I'm highly impressed. One thing I would say is that it's possible the BMI recommendations are a little low. Dr John Briffa, in his book "Waist Disposal: The Ultimate Fat Loss Manual for Men" (highly recommended, by the way--it's fully referenced), observes that the lowest risk of death for a man corresponds with a BMI of 25--technically in the "overweight" category". A small shift upwards in the divisions (which are, after all, unscientific) would correct that anomaly. As it stands, I am aiming to get to the lowest part of the "overweight" ratings, rather than into the "normal" zone. Also because I know that will be a healthy weight for me at which I look slim enough.

Thanks, Furthest South. I'm aiming for a BMI below 25. My goal is to get my weight down to the mid-160s and then see about stabilising it. Right now, that's just a bit more than 19 lbs below my current weight. I'm amazed. When I started, the 160s were 200+ pounds away and all I could see was the immense mountain I had to climb. Now, it's a matter of scaling the last ridge and I'm surprised at how far I've come. It may be that the BMI recommendations are low. I know that the figures keep being refined. I'm just aiming for a weight inside the normal range. One I think I can maintain healthily for an indefinite time.

This is probably one time in your life that you are happy to be 'below average' You have less than 20 lb to go to your goal weight. I can't imagine a man of 183 lb would still be 'overweight'. Hope your week isn't as stressful as you think its going to be and I am sure you will continue with the gym without a trainer as you have seen the benefits of regular exercise for yourself.

BMI is a height/weight ratio. I'm 5'10", and don't hit normal weight for my height until I go below 174 lbs (12 st 6 lbs). I'm still above 13 st (182 lbs), so I still have a bit of a way to go before I hit that weight, much less my goal weight. Coincidentally, my goal happens to be close to the weight (65 kg) that my mother thinks ideal for me.

So excited for you. You are so close. The last little bit is the hardest to achieve and you are mastering it with flying colors. Way to go!
