Sometimes you gotta just roll with the punches, even when it turns out that you've kicked your own butt. Sorry for the mixed metaphor. I'm a little out of sorts.

My excessive joy in Zumba and Pilates has indeed led to a badly strained left piriformis; my left buttock. I cannot flex that muscle for a long time, or I'll damage it further. That means no Zumba, Pilates, riding my recumbent bike with resistance, walking uphill, or at a fast pace. 6 to 8 weeks!

No Aqua, Silver Sneakers, etc. I can walk on a treadmill, if I keep in flat, and slow, with no distractions to keep me from using perfect alignment. No music to get me moving; more like music for meditation and contemplation of mindfully living my life.

My wonderful physical therapist laid it out straight to me, then worked with me overtime to help me find proper alignment, to fire my abs without straining my pectorals, shoulders, neck... nothing to send problems up & down the chain. I am thrilled to be doing abdominal work.

I am so NOT thrilled to not be able to eat as much without gaining too much weight. However, it's another mindfulness lesson; slow down, take the time to make the healthy soups and salads, eat more veggies and less snack foods. I can still eat my yummy homemade bars and balls, just with WAY more moderation.

1 week down; I can do this, I will survive. I will NOT feel better and decide to push it; I want my body to last a long time, and a chronic butt-ache is not something I want to live with, lol!

I'm sitting here with an ice pack on my backside. My foam roller awaits me on the floor, where I'll balance myself with my core and do various arm movements without firing up my neck, shoulders, or pecs. Or glutes.

I made a Farmers Casserole for my partner's mom this morning, and will be making some Hearty White Bean and Millet Soup for dinner. Debating whether or not to make whole wheat beer bread to go with it...

I'd better get on with my exercises. Maybe I'll live it up and peddle my bike without resistance. Hey, no sweat in my future, unless I have a hot flash...

I had a piriformis issue last year - and it tied into the IT band...I used a soft foam roller and did gentle stretches; modified my routine and it got better. good luck, buddy!

Thanks, HCB. I saw a doctor, who gave me the diagnosis. The bruising is still fading, but at least big hard lump is going down. I'm not to do any rolling of the area that is damaged; it could tear more. I'm glad yours got better, HCB. I know mine will, too. I just have to be patient and careful.
