cocobutt's Journal, 13 June 2011

I reread parts of a hand-written food/diet journal that I kept from 2001-2007. (several years skipped here and there) It is amazing to see a pattern of bad habits over a decade. Going through menopause has been a positive change for me. A combination of raging hormones and excessive caffeine and sugar made me a manic depressive lunatic in my 30s and 40s. I was suicidal, angry, and tearful several times a month and gaining weight like crazy.

I can see clearly the effect that too much sugar and caffeine have had on my health. Even just the few teaspoons of sugar in coffee that I was drinking every day back then made me dizzy as hell and set me up for more binge eating, usually in the afternoon and evening.

Shedding 60 pounds has not been just a load off my body. My energy and spirit feel so much better now. It's incredible. I need to remind myself every day to make good choices so I can keep feeling this great. I've got to keep my sugar intake down. I don't know if it's possible to cut it out completely. Maybe?

(Side note: I feel great except for a headache that feels like eyestrain. Started last night while we were watching the Harry Potter Deathly Hallows movie Part 1. Still bothering me.)

Coco, I know exactly what you mean. I found my food journals from the last 2 times I did this, and can clearly see where I started veering off course. I never had the problems with PMS, but boy did I have problem with sugar. I have since cut all processed sugar out of my foods, and feel so much better. Have a great day, and sure hope that the headache leaves soon!

Thanks, Stef! I'm glad you and I got our wakeup calls, even at our age -- it's never too late! Wish I had known as much at age 30 as I do now. At least I'm happy to know my daughter is more mindful of her eating than I was.
