northernmusician's Journal, 05 September 2014

It seems the more I try to cut carbs the more temped I am by them. I'm not sure if it's the time of year or what it is. I'm beginning to think I won't be ready to cut until after mooses season. I'm in full hunter gatherer mode right now. Fruits are available easily at this time of year and I think our physiology yearns for them to prepare for winter, a time when historically we had to bulk up to get us through winter. There's only so much wild game you can get in the winter to keep you going.

Yesterday I got in two loads of firewood, taught into the evening, and then filleted and froze close to 60 pounds of salmon. I could have used your help BBB. Right now my days are pretty much non-stop. I have salmon to get in the smoker that has been in a brine since last night and wood to stack. Tomorrow I'm off with some guys for the day to get firewood for people who can no longer gather it for themselves.

I went way overboard on calories yesterday (and carbs, oops) by about 600. I may have burned that, but I dislike counting on work to adjust for my foolishness in eating.

Anyway, I have a song for you guys to listen to. Granted, it will not be the style you like for many of you, but I love this song, and I love this band. The girl has such a sweet voice, but you can hear where she runs out of carbs and goes into ketosis. :D Okay. Maybe I'm reading into that. It's at 18 seconds in. Surely you can listen that long?

You're funny :) I'm familiar with the band, but I think the best song they put out was 'all around me', and I haven't heard anything from them since. You're very busy from the sounds of it, maybe you're just craving all the extra carbs because you're working so stinkin hard. Just my theory lol. I bet it's beautiful up there in the fall :)

It is beautiful up here. We've had frost 2 nights in a row. We could still get a mild September and October. It happens. I hope it happens. Flyleaf is just now putting out a new album. First in quite a few years. She's been starting a family.

i love fresh salmon. you are so lucky. I girl friend of mine is from Alaska and when she goes home to visit she will bring me some back but not near enough. :) . I love to smoke it on my grill. one of my favorites.

OMG... she's amazing with an amazing range, but partial to bass. Is this what's going to happen to mrsmole when she goes into ketosis? So there's a name for the insanity I've been going through. I asked once if I was in squirrel mode and hoarding food to get me through the winter. And it's all been from the garden and trees. Thanks for the share.

I love me some Salmon and Flyleaf. I have a good recipe for garlic, rosemary salmon if you'd like to try it. My favorite Flyleaf song is "All Around Me". Keep up the great work!

Zavala, please dish! "Shhh", Rocker. She may be listening. Rocker and Soco, thanks for the laugh. Brent. No bass. You'd have to be happy with 26" rainbow trout, salmon, and steelhead. (Half hour drive.) Thanks everyone. Niki, if you're ever headed to Alaska by car, you'll have to stop for a coffee. Thanks Sneeze. :D

Actually snezica... I think you have an awesome name. That was uncalled for. My apologies.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, feelings, and musical interests. I hadn't heard of flyleaf but welcome exposure to new bands. My kids are adult now and so the constant exposure to different bands is no longer the norm in our home. Lacy embodies all of the emotion she expresses in her music. J

That's OK, I didn't think anything about it. My English speaking friends just call me snow, short for snow white.

Fall carb-loading hits everyone I think. My wife and I were just discussing this very thing on our walk this morning. We are going to be making a conscious effort to get our carbs back down. They've been creeping up over the last few weeks (along with the scale). I hadn't really considered the fact that its almost autumn. Especially since we're still in the 90's and are predicted to stay there for another week before we get our first taste of Fall with a Canadian Low pushing some cool weather our way next weekend. It sounds as if you'll have a well stocked pantry, anyway.

Speaking of Fall carb-loading, when I used to live high in the Colorado mountains (at over 9,000 ft in elevation!), I used to joke about "Mashed Potato & Gravy Season", because there are 3 months where all you want to do is sit around in your footie pajamas, by the fireplace and eat a massive bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy.
