I've been doing Atkins wrong. I read the book yesterday, something I probably should have done before I started.

I didn't think it was that big a deal to have a breath mint, or some cottage cheese, as long as I was pretty close on the carbs. Or to go to 24 net carbs., which I figured was pretty close. Well, I guess pretty close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

Because after 5 days of doing this, I'm STILL not in ketosis where my body is using its own fat, and I realized that not following the rules precisely has bitten me in the ass, so I'm starting over.

Better late than never. I only lost 5 days, and I still feel great, but I'm starting over, as of today.

Today is now Day 1 of Induction. Again.

This time, I'm following it to the letter. Water only, which totally sucks. I honestly don't know how someone could give up bread, sugar, alcohol, soda, and juice all in the same day. Hell, I gave up sugar almost a year ago, and that was incredibly hard all by itself! Now I'm used to that, but I'm having trouble giving up breath mints! And diet lemonade. And diet soda. The book said I could have certain ones, but I'm playing it safe and just having water.

Wish me luck!

I guess I was lucky when I began and only watched calories, not knowing about protein, carbs, fats and fiber. After I began working out is when I was informed by my niece I needed to keep track of everything. Do what you know will work for you. Trial and error. You've stuck with every program you began so I have no doubt you'll find the one that will work the way it should for your body to enable you to lose the weight. Wishing you the best.

It took me years to appreciate water. Try a slice of lemon in it for a break. The thing I'm still struggling with is drinking black coffee.

Can you have stevia? Or club soda? I've been using some flavored stevia drops in coffee and tea and like the flavor. It isn't a real intense flavor - it's just "there". The brand I'm currently using is SweetLeaf but there is also one called Now (somethingoranother). Now Organics maybe? Wishing you MUCH luck!

cheese will sneak up on you, and so will nuts--even machs and almonds. I just make sure I eat plenty of extra protein and cook with bacon drippings, coconut oil, or olive oil. Avocados are great for when/if you get dizzy spells, (or light headed often) and eggs are great for a quick snack to knock the hunger edge off. Alcohol is my speed bump---so now when I drink, I drink Scotch. Delicious Eating!!

cheaper way is to chew on mint leaves, "0" carbs.

C67247 - never thought about mint leaves - thanks for the tip.

It sounds like you have been wolfing down the breath mints subliminally as a way to get sugar. Are we talking like a whole box of Tic Tacs a day or what here? Mentos? My ex used to eat a bottle of Tums every 2 days, justifying it by saying she was eating them for the calcium.

Just wanted to confirm - the SweetLeaf drops I'm using report 0 carbs. I buy thru Vitacost but have seen them on Amazon as well. I suspect a local healthfood store might carry them as well.

Or get Chlorophyll and Mint, made by Swanson (500 chewable tablets) from the health food store. No sugar, fillers, or carbs.

Great ideas, one and all. Eddie, to clarify, it's the Sugar Free Life Savers Wint-O-Green. Four of them is 15g sugar alcohol, 0 net carbs, but the book said stay away from sugar alcohol on induction. Had sorbitol and really helped when I had constipation, too. But I will try the mint, Stevia and lemon. Thanks again to all.

Good luck - you can do it!

Mrs Mole I carry Tic Tacs because being diabetic my breath will go south fast when my sugar drops. Even "sugar free" has sugar. I changed to the Listerine stamps that dissolve on the tongue. And I always wondered why, if they can do that with mouthwash, why can't they do it with tequila and Jack Daniels?

Meh. Instructions are over rated. :)

Tell her NM. Men don;t read instructions, read maps, or ask for directions. Starting with Moses and that 40 year long trek through the desert....

I could not drink only water, so kudos to you! I eat low carb and drink the Zevia pop and a little crystal light, and koolaid and tea sweetend with stevia. Not the best but that is the only way I can stay on plan. Also, are you losing weight? How are you judging wether or not you are in ketosis? because 24 IS close, and ought to be low enough to lose.

I love water... might add a sprig of mint or lemon balm a slice of lime in the winter. Drink black coffee now. I tried some the old way a cooler weeks ago with milk and sugar, couldn't drink it. Too sweet! now iced coffee I need milk and sweetener.

Reading the book helps tremendously

Does the book still have the fat fast in it? I found that I felt better starting there for a few days. That helped me to give up everything all at once. After 3 days I felt fantastic. With Induction it took a little longer. It will be great. You're already there. Just adjust a little. You'll do great. :D

Nothing about a fat fast. I'm using Ketone strips and peeing on them. Sorry if that's TMI, but I don't know any other way to measure Ketones. They were beige for 6 days straight which is how I knew I was getting too many carbs. 24 was too many. And I wasn't counting all the diet lemonade, so I was probably getting closer to 30g/day.
