So, my doctor referred me to the local Health Basics course (http://www.reddeerpcn.com/health-basics). The course is designed to help folks be more mindful about and committed to making the lifestyle changes associated with better health and longer lives. I have, over the years, referred people to this course and I have seen some of them make some really impressive changes over time. The instructors for this course are required, as part of their orientation, to take my Group Facilitation Course, so I know all of the instructors, but in a very different role--as my students, not as my instructors. Part of me says, "humph, these young healthy whippersnappers have nothing to teach me." Part of me says, "I am too smart, too knowledgeable, too in control of my life to need this." Part of me says, "I should be able to do all of this on my own." Part of me says, "I don't want to spend 2 hours a week with the kind of people who are sent to courses like this." I had similar feelings when my doc referred me to the PCN nurse. I was a bit pissy initially with her and waaay too eager to show my superiority (?). By the end of the appointment though, I was glad of the help and she had helped me figure out a few things that have been quite useful. Based on that experience, I am going to give this a try, and just hope that I get over the pissy part and can see the benefits. I'm also going to hope that the room is filled with strangers.
