Smilesong's Journal, 08 April 2014

Well, I was right. The hunger when I woke this morning was intense. Some of the worst I have ever felt. In the past when I have done IF, I ate my last meal really late in the day, 8-10pm. So if it takes 12 or so hours for the body to move food thru the stomach, small and large intestine then previously by 7-8am I still had food in my system. But with me eating my days food at 2-3pm yesterday and nothing after, that food had mostly cleared thru my system.

My body was forced to use up the energy stores over night. When the stores are used the hunger signals come on strong to help push you to replace what was used as I have read. Ok, so that explains both my strong hunger today and logically why I keep boomeranging back up the scale.

So, how do I stave off the hunger and stop myself from regaining weight. Water and hot tea have been a friend but even that has limits.

Spreading your food intake out over the day might help. It just takes planning so that you don't overdue.

I appreciate that feedback.....but I am doing this compressed eating intentionally! Gotta tame my hunger signals. It is an extreme approach but I think that my body needs to learn how to stop reacting to the hunger signals like a trained seal....Part of IF-ing is to get your body readjusted so the signals subside.

oh ok...I get it.

This is a new approach to me. What signals are you trying to readjust? I am a compulsive overeater and I tend to use any excuse at hand to eat the least being hunger. Hence I would think that if you know you are truly hungry as you explained above, then that would be a genuine signal. Aren't you afraid that if you are hit by real hunger that intense that you would overeat.

I use IF to exercise in the morning during my fasted state. I have pangs but I drink lots of cold water during my 2 hours cardio and weight training. Everyone has the option to overeat anytime they are awake. If anyone wants info on IF here is one spot http:// www.nerdfitness.com/ blog/2013/08/06/ a-beginners-guide-to-intermittent-fasting/. I am now doing a fat fast to help my metabolism, but thats another story.

I've been using Slimquick which is doing wonders for me as I would eat a lot after getting into the habit after being pregnant. It has been curbing the craving for me and being hungry in the morning is a good thing but if you go nuts eating right away it can kill things for the day I also have been in a thing where you don't snack after 7pm so I drink tea. and if I feel the urge to snack I know I am trying to stay awake and not really hungry. I will go to bed earlier and it also helps me stop wanting to snack.

Kris AZ...you and me both! But working out in a fasted state is SO hard. I get it and the science makes so much sense but its an UPHILL battle. I bought a treadmill and walk really slow. Mostly cause I am a cranking morning person and I still feel weak with the hunger. My "atkins" mind tells me to back off the carbs to get rid of the shakiness and hunger even more but I fear I'll faint in the street if I do both IF and Atkins.

ALPHAb60....if you are a true compulsive overeater, you may want to look into FASTING as a tool to help end the cycle of overeating. The signals I am talking about are HUNGER PAINS. There is so much new literature out there that is looking into how those that are obese / overweight may have resistance to the hormone that tells us to STOP eating and in turn the fat cells may be sending out a hormone signal that says to keep eating. Its harsh!! I love this FS website as it gives me a chance to "Self Talk" thru what I am eating etc. But, if and only if interested, I started my own little blog in the last few weeks. (I know...another blog out there) But, the blog is mainly for me to dive deeper into the research I am reading and think it through. I figured others might be interested too. http://innerresolution.blogspot.com/2014/02/sleep-may-be-your-best-weight-loss.html So, to make a long story short, FASTING, it seems is showing strong promise to reverse this obesity hormone imbalance and stop the strong cravings. Nature's way of adjusting us if that self imposed FAST was a real famine. I only have 1 story up at this moment but its part of the subject of that first story, as sleep is a type of fasting.

M.H......This is great advise!! Just go to bed, if you can, when hunger comes on strong at night. So many obese/overweight people are sleep deprived so they say. I tend to only get 5-6 hours a night....then crash hard on Sunday's. I miss out on so much "day off" time! I really want to get 8 hours a day. I know I'll feel better. I am working on that!

Hi smilesong. Ive been doing IF since December 1, and I can tell you its gets easier. With me I eat dinner around 8 pm so on my two fast days a week I just have dinner, I choose to make these work days so if I keep myself busy I don't get hunger 'pains' at all, tho sometimes if I get bored I want to eat, but I don't need to eat. The other three work days of the week I switch to 16:8 so still having dinner at 8 I skip breakfast and have lunch around 1pm. Weekends are sometimes my 'indulgence days, where have a few drinks, and eat three meals a day, treats etc, so naturally while my weight is steadily declining there are days its up alarmingly, but it always drops off quickly. I go to the gym 6 days a week, three days are intense HIT training, two are mix of cardio and weights and one long cardio only. I can only speak for myself, butt his is the way I like to live, its enjoyable and flexible, and on those times when its a birthday, or I go out and party its fine, still I enjoy a gradual weight loss, so this is not my diet, but lifestyle. sure it may not be for everyone, everyone has to find what works for them, but this is the easiest thing Ive ever done, and as I often say when you're trying to lose weight its often easier not to eat (fast) than figure out what to eat. I wish you lots of luck with IF and hope you stick with it. Steve
